Achebe, Dean of Durham College, announced the Initia tion of the “Weekend College” program Center for Community Service; and cooperative sum mer program for high school juniors to be directed by Dr. M. H. Dudley, Jr., coordinator, department of continuing educa tion, and Osofo Lafayette H. Mc- Donald, college minister and instructor of Black Studies. The “Weekend College” pro gram, which involves a combination of independent di rected study and Saturday class attendance will begin in the fall quarter of 1972-1073 academic year. Admission to the pro gram will be open to those stu- dents who wish more flexibility in educational environment and modes of learning, employed persons wishing to pursue edu cation part-time far career ob jectives , and persons who may wish to pursue a degree at home for personal reasons. The opening data for the Cen ter for Community Services will be announced in the near future. The center will servr as a clearing-house for business management Information, plan and conduct seminars, confer ences and discussions of public interest, offer programs of cul tural interest to the community of Durham, and engage in sex education Including campaign a galnst the unnecessary use of drugs. Cooperative summer school program for high school Juniors is tentatively scheduled to start in June 1972. The aim of this program is to generate interest among high school Juniors in learning, thereby making entry into colleges or universities of their choice a realistic hope. Courses to be taught will in clude how to prepare for stand ardized examinations with em phasis on the scholastic apti tude test, Basic mathematics, English Fundamental, reading skills, and Social science. Fi nally, a workshop including a field trip designed to expose the participants to different career opportunities in eovernmeiit business, and industry will be planned. A Week Os Church Comp Week The Annual Camp meeting of the Church of God was held on the State Camp Ground. Cha pel Kill, from August 17-22, Special days were reserved for "Youth Fellowship Day," "Camp Ground Rally Day" and Missionary Day," Conferences were held for Church School, Missionary Workshop and Youth Fellowship, Wednesday night of that week, a Fellowship Dinner and a sur prise Recognition Service was held for the state vice-chair man, Rev. Mrs. Nancy A. Ford, pastor of the Church of God, East Etienton Street, Raleigh. She has been and still is a faith ful, hard working person in the promotion of this Camp. Gifts from each Church of God in the state were presented to her by the Missionary president, Mrs. Esther Thompson. Mrs. Rosa B. Perry of the Raleigh Church of God spoke in Rev. Ford’s behalf. Mrs. Emma Foreman supplied the music, Mrs. Anna S, Amerson presid ed. The Camp closing included Coronation Day on Friday. Miss Cheryl Smith presided. Gifts were presented to the staff.
