Pag* 10 - THE NEWS >• Nov«mb«r. 1981 C JF General Assembly To Probe Major Issues Over 100 workshops, for major plenaries on six im* portant forums reflecting every major issue facing Jewish Federations at home and abroad are in* eluded in the agenda of the 60th' General Assembly^ of the Council of Jewish Federations which con venes November 10-15 in St. Louis. Preliminary registration figures indicate an atten dance of well over 2,500 representatives from the 200 Jewish Federations in the United States and Canada which comprise the CJF. The opening GA Plenary Session on Wednesday evening, Nov. 11, will mark the official commencement of CJF’s 50th Anniversary Year. The major address of the evening will be delivered by CJF President Morton L. Mandel of Cleveland. The Plenary will also include the premiere showing of “50 Years”, an audio-visual review of the past half- century of North American Jewish history as seen through the eyes of CJF Past Presidents. “Cove nant and Community”, an original musical composi tion with narrative, will also highlight the opening Plenary. Six Forums are planned to provide intensive discus sion on topics of primary concern to the Federation community in 1982. “The Jew in the Non-Jewish World”; “Ethiopian Jews •A Community in Peril”; “Jews in the Soviet Union: Managing the Current Crisis”; “Peace in the Middle East — The Role of North American Jewry” and “Jewish Concern for Women’s Rights: Oppor tunities and Respon sibilities for Federations.” On Friday afternoon, November 13, the final Forum, “Jewish Com munities in Distress Around the World”, will be preceded by a march to the old Courthouse in St. Louis to demonstrate solidarity with all oppressed Jews. The CJF is the associa tion of 200 Federations, Welfare Funds and Com munity Councils which serve nearly 800 com munities and embrace oyer 95 percent of the Jewish gopulation of the United tates and Canada. Established in 1932, the Council serves as a na- tional instrument to strengthen the work and impact of Jewish Federa tions through leadership in developing programs to meet changing needs in the Jewish community; through the exchange of successful experiences to assure the most effective community services; through establishing guidelines for fund raising and operation; and through joint national planning and action on common purposes dealing with local, regional, national and international needs.
