Most classes will run for two or three sessions. Any new classes for Sessions ^2 and ^3 will be announced in the October and November “Charlotte Jewish N^GWS FEES LISTED ARE FOR ONE SESSION PER CHILD. No classes or workshops will be held on Rosh Hashana, Thursday, September 27, nor on Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 22. There is a break in October for the week of the 8th. Arts And Cultures Of Other People Fourth, fifth and sixth grade children will have the opportunity to discover the influence past periods and cultures have had on 20th century American art. They wiU be able to experience their discoveries with hands-on activities, such as jewelry-making, ceramics, design, weaving and painting. Students wiU also be exposed to lectures presented by their instructor and by the staff of the Mint Museum Education Department. Cultures ex plored may include Precolumbian, African, Japanese, Middle-Eastern and American. Instruc tor Jim Walker is also teaching the Introduction to Design course for younger children. Breakdancing For Children And Adults Take two hours on two Sunday afternoons to learn the basics of breakdancing! Students will see a performance by the Dynamic Breakers, the most popular exhibition group in Charlotte, on the first afternoon. They will also learn about the history of breakdancing and learn simple movements, such as, the moon-walk and the wave. The second afternoon students will t>e introduced to more difficult stand ing moves, such as popping and locking, and floor- work, such as the coffee-grinder. Instructors are all members of the Dynamic Breakers, managed by Barbara Rogers. The Dynamic Breakers have appeared on Channel Nine’s “Kids 'World”, have danced in “Showcase” at Central Piedmont Community College, and at the Marriott. They have taught breakdancing in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system. laggf Creative Playgroup Three days a week parents are invited to leave their infants and young toddlers in care of the Jewish Community Center’s Creative Playgroup staff. Children up to age 2¥i years will experience sharing veuious activities and snacks with their age groups. The Playgroup will open September 4. Staff will help children develop socialization, reading readiness, fine and gross motor development, ex plore art, music and special celebrations. Parents are expected to provide lunch, and more importantly, are strongly encouraged to participate in the functioning of the Playgroup. Volunteers will receive a day of childcare free of charge in exchange for a day of involvement with the Playgroup. Instructors Bobbie Lashua, a graduate student of child development, and Lari Massachi, worked together for last year’s Jewish Community Center Playgroup. Clubs 23 and 46 Join the Jewish Community Center and Rita Keane for a Sunday afternoon of fun and learning experiences! Second and third graders will delight in “Club 23”, where they will have an opportunity to share group activities with their peers. Activities may include hiking, cooking, new games, arts and crafts, and special field trips. Fourth, fifth and sixth graders will enjoy similar activities in **Club 46”. In addition they may have the opportunity to become involved in local volunteer activities, such as adopting a grand parent. Club 46 will also have an overnight. Rita Kean« is a recent graduate of UNCC’s teach^ certification bachelors degree program. She is now teaching second grade and worked at Camp Maccabbee t.his past summer.
