Page 15-THE NEWS-October, 1984 Ashendorf Concert Features Pianist On Sunday evening, Octo ber 14, at 8 p.m., pianist Georgi Riabikoff will appear as the featured artist in the Third Annual Rosalie Citron Ashendorf Memorial Concert at Temple Israel. He will pre sent a program of light, familiar classics by Chopin, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Gershwin and other famous composers. The concert is open to the community and there is no charge. Mr. Riabikoff, winner of in ternational acclaim, comes from a musical family related to Tchaikovsky and Rachman inoff. He gave his first concert at the age of four. He pursued his studies in European con servatories and with the great composer and pianist, Sergei Prokofieff. During World War II and the terrible years of Nazi oc cupation, he helped Jewish families and other persecuted people to hide and escape death. Trapped by the Ges tapo, he refused to reveal their hiding places. The Nazis, knowing he was a fine boy pianist, swore that he should never play again and drove hot spikes through his palms, broke his arm and crushed his fingers. In spite of all tortures, he did not betray these people. After the war, Riabikoff studied with Walter Gieseking and Conrad Hansen. Ri&bikotf In New York, he has studied with Claudio Arrau and the great pianist and pupil of Rachmaninoff, Mme. Gina Bachauer, who wrote: “Of all the young pianists I have heard, I find that George Riabikoff has not only the best inborn musical talent, but also great poetry, imagination and temperament in his playing. He is different from the others, with something quite exceptional. His depth of feel ing, his inner spark and warmth were acquired only through long suffering, which have made him a real and great £u*tist. I £un confident that he will have a great future which he so well deserves.” NCEISNOTEMOUGH- A New Spcciahy Consignment Shop MATERNITY CLOTHES and BABY ITEMS • We are now accepting your **Iike new*' fall maternity and baby apparel. • Also specializing in unique baby gifts: books for new mothers, hand crafted wooden toys, and adorable stuffed animals (washable with safe ty lock eyes). • Now carrying specialized frames and ornaments for Baby*s first Chanukah and Christmas. • Presently have in stock, baby crib sets (comforter-bumper pads-dust ruf fles, ect.). 342 Circle Avenue 376-5624 past Mecklenburg Furniture off 300 blk.
