Ski Why We Want Om (L to R) Daniel Brenner, Eric Lerner, Julie Lerner, David Asrael. On October 27 a good por tion of the Charlotte Jewish community came to view the Shalom Park facilities, to see for themselves, just how far the construction has progress ed. Also attending were many graduates of the Hebrew Academy, who came to help with the community orienta tion and tours. A few of these graduates offered their thoughts about their school years at the Academy. Julie Lerner, daughter of Ssmi and Lynn Lemer, reflect ed on her years at the Academy. “I remember,” she said, “learning Hebrew and be ing exposed to ideas and thoughts from the Jewish peo ple. I remember the Hebrew we studied in the classroom and the blessings after the meal. The Hebrew Academy taught me about being a Jew, and I have retained much of it since I left. My yeeirs at the Academy started my educa- Dalya Massachi tion off on the right foot. Right now I go to Country Day £ind I am active in Jewish youth groups. I am currently serving as president of BBG.” Lynn Lemer speaks well of the years her children spent at the Hebrew Academy. She ex plains, “My children all loved it at the Academy. They real ly enjoyed the Hebrew course work and could conduct ser vice such as the Passover Seder. I even remember one humorous episode when Julie’s rabbit died and the en tire school said “Kaddish.” Joe! Asrael, son of Dr. Ger- son and Wilma Asrael, recalls: “I think the main thing I remember is being close to people. It was like being in a great big family. Because I went, I got a strong Jewish background. I am very proud of being a Jew. I try to go to Temple as often as I can. I am a member of BBYO and USY. Keith Greenspon Dalya Massachi, daughter of Ben and Rose Massachi, spent this past summer in Israel and had these thoughts about the Hebrew Academy. “Academi cally it was a very good school and I had very unusual ex periences there. I remember a Purim carnival which was a very happy time for me and we all enjoyed it very much. I also remember that on Tu B’ Shevat we would go outside and plant trees just like they do in Israel, and then we came inside and made traditional foods. David Brenner, son of Dr. Saul and Martha Brenner, recently graduated from the Hebrew Academy and is now attending Charlotte Latin. “I am now continuing my Jewish education by taking Hebrew courses with Ziva London,” (Hebrew instructor at the Hebrew Academy), he said, “and I am studying about the Joel Asrael David Brenner great Jewish commentators. I liked going to the Academy and I wish that there was a Jewish Junior High £uid High School so that I could continue my study pace. At the Academy, I learned both Hebrew and secular subjects and it has been a real help to me.” Compiled by Arny Pickholtz “Why are you sending your child to the Hebrew Academy next ye£ir?” Here are some answers from committed future Academy parents: “Ruth wanted to be a Rabbi from the time she was 18 months old There wasn’t a question about the fact that we were going to send her, it was a natural thing to do As a people we have endured 5000 years of pain and suffering. It’s an obligation to give the kids a strong Jewish identity ” These are comments from parents of new students who will be attending the Hebrew Academy in the fall of 1986. Peter and Deborah Telem moved to Charlotte from Israel. They previously had lived in New Jersey. Peter’s father is a professor of Hebraic Studies at Rutgers University and Deborah was born in Israel. Next year, the Telems will enroll their daugher Adee in the Academy because they want a good Jewish/Hebrew education to complement her secular education. Peter ex plains, “Our kids spoke Hebrew when we arrived from Israel but they have since lost most of it. I grew up in New Jersey and didn’t receive much Jewish education. When I went to Israel, I was really behind because I didn’t have the background. I was the on ly Jewish person in my school and it was good and bad.
