Page 19-THE NEWS-September, 1986 Charlotte Yiddish Institute Awards Scholarships By Baila Pransky One of the prime goals of the Charlotte Yiddish Institute is to encourage young students to pursue the study and use of Yiddish and Yiddish culture. To that end the Institute awards scholarships to qualified students to attend the annual Charlotte Yiddish Institute at Wildacres, Little Switzerland, NC. A scholar ship student at the 1986 In stitute was Chana Pollack from Hampshire College, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Mass. Excerpts from her recently received let ter follow; Shalom Aleichem Chaverim, Nearly a month or so has gone by and I find myself reminiscing of ten (about the Yiddish Institute). My summer has continued to progress on quite a “high'’ started of course by my par ticipation in the Yiddish In stitute. To tell the truth, I’ve been working in our warehouse (National Yid dish Book Center) in Holyoke, Mass., unpacking, sorting, shifting and alph abetizing Yiddish books for over one year now. While it is always exciting, there comes a point in every book- shlepper’s career where you ask yourself *‘Far vos?” (why), for what all the shlep- ping (lugging) sorting, etc., will this information ever go beyond the warehouse? Will I ever be able to really understand what was writ ten? Will I ever be able to share what I’ve read and en joyed in Yiddish? So for me the Charlotte Yiddish In stitute came at the perfect YIDDISH VINKL NEXT MEETING: Wednesday, 7:30 P.M. October 8,1986 Shalom Park Jr. Congregation Wing Yiddish Institute at Wildacres ’86. Chana is pictured in middle of 3rd row (long hair and wearing glasses). dank aich time, and helped me prevent “book-shleppers burn out”...Truly, it was one of the most exciting Yiddish events I’ve been at, with all the events taking place in Yiddish. I can’t emphasize enough how being in all- Yiddish environment was a rare treat for me. I imagine this is a similar problem for other Yiddish students; be ing able to find Yiddish books is one issue, but go try and find an all Yiddish speaking environment to im merse yourself in...it’s near ly impossible unless you hang out in the Bronx or on Brighton Beach, etc. for a while. For me, this immer sion in Yiddish was an op portunity I hadn’t had since sitting at my Bubba (grand mother) and Zaidy’s (grand father’s) table as a child...I’d like to thank you all for enabling me to travel to North Carolina, ex perience your doromdike gastfreindlechkite (south ern hospitality) and study Yiddish with you.
