Temple Beth El V’Shalom Has Shabbat Nursery Service Since July, 1987, a group of dedicated parents have worked together to create a Shabbat Nursery service for preschoolers and young chil dren during Shabbat services. The success has been fantastic with an average attendance of 10-15 children each service. The numbers are growing each week. “We wanted the children to grow up feeling welcome and at home at the Temple,” said Nina Haas, who is the parent coordinator for the Temple Nursery. “Our goal was to create an atmosphere of Shab bat at a level the children could enjoy. Every week, we begin our Nursery service by lighting the Shabbat candles. It’s a lovely sight to see them gathered eu-ound the table and hear them reciting the candle blessing with great enthu siasm. “Next, we work on a crafts project. This year, we have made puppets from paper bags, Shabbat candle sticks, construction paper menorahs, Shofarot from paper plates and beautifully colored and glittered New Year cards.” For Chanukah, the children worked together designing their own menorah. They cut, arranged and glued tissue paper creating something wonderful! With yellow tissue flames, they “lit” their menorah during the Chanukah family service. Each week after crafts, the children line up to join the adult service for the Kiddush. They march into the Sanc tuary, singing “Shabbat Shalom,” to the Bimah to par ticipate in the Kiddush. Often there is not enough room on the Bimah for everyone. Then it’s back to the Nursery for snacks and circle time. We sing songs and read stories and have some free play until the Oneg Shabbat. The Nursery service not on ly attracts the preschoolers. Often the older children will drop in during the last half of the service. They read stories to the little ones and help out if we have babies in attend ance. The Nursery service has been such a success largely due to the fact that we have such a great group of parents SINCE 1883, IT HAS BEEN OUR PRIVILEGE TO SERVE THE JEWISH FAITH. During Chanukah, the Nursery committee sponsored a Chanukah party for the children of the community. They played games, ate lots of sweets and latkes and sang songs accompanied by Steven Haas on the guitar. All the children received a goodie bag full of toys and candy. The first Tzedakah Project of the year is raising money for the Children’s Forest in Israel. The Nursery children colored a huge paper tree, which now stands in the Socied HaU. They cut out and colored leaves for the tree. Donations are accepted for each leaf in anticipation of sending the J.N.F. a check during Tu B’Shvat. We are very proud that the tree is fuU of leaves with almost every branch covered. The Nursery children will have their first outing for Tu B’Shvat. We have planned a trip to a tree nursery to see saplings growing and hear about the importance trees have on our lives. Then after purchasing a tree, we’ll return to the Temple to plant it together. On February 6, a TOT SHABBAT will be held in con junction with Tu B’Shvat for the community. The service will begin at 10 a.m. with a children’s Oneg at 10:30 a.m. The Nursery is open from 7:30 p.m. until the end of ser vices each Friday at no cost. Anyone wishing to work in the Nursery, donate their time, special talents, toys, books, or to make a donation to the Nursery Fund, please call Nina Haas, 365-1029.
