Lubavitch Preschool and Dayschool News Page 17-THE NEWS-February 1990 Lubavitch Preschool excels in creative play. In simple words, the child develops his learning skills through play. In order to blend the learning experience with the freedom of play. Fern Sanderson, morning teacher, has improved the fascinating concept called learning centers. The play/learn centers are as attractive to children as any play room or toy store. The advan tage here is the role these centers play in the development of the child’s comprehension of the subject matter through the many “hands on” projects. During the month of January, Fern transformed a section of her classroom into a play busi ness office with a typewriter and desk accessories, pads, various size paper clips and a variety of pens and pencils. The children pretend that they are in a real business office and on their own, assume rotating roles that excite their imagination. They have learned the importance of coor dination and organization, and learned about the different uses for paper clips. They have also learned to type their names to distinguish between caps and lower case letters. Creative play has an addition al advantage according to Fern. “It brings the real world much closer to the world of the child,” says Fern. “A child could relate to his or her own play experience the next time they visit an office.” This month Fern is creating a play / learn grocery store in her classroom, with all the trappings of a genuine store. This will give an opportunity for her students to assume the roles of consumer, seller, cashier and stock person, just to mention a few among the many exciting things the chil dren will experience. Susan Doobrow and Michelle Hodges have been working end lessly towards making Luba vitch Dayschool the best school in the area, and they have seen much progress.
