/ JCC Plants Trees in Honor of Tu B’Shevat Page 15-THE NEWS-March 1991 By Marcia Stern, Judaic Resource Specialist In honor of the holiday of Tu B’Shevat, the Jewish Communi ty Center planted 29 beautiful and functional trees around the Children’s Playground at Sha lom Park. Families gathered to enjoy seasonal refreshments and plant Leylan Cypress trees that will provide a wind block as they mature and Red Sunset Maples that will provide much needed shade. After the trees were planted, the children gathered as Marcia Stern explained the significance of the holiday and why it is so important to plant trees here in the U.S. and Israel. Special thanks to Scott Me- naker, president of the Charlotte B’nai B’rith Lodge, and Steve Menaker, Eric Levine and Rich Osborne, Lodge members, for their help planting the trees. Host Weekend with Charleston Srs. By Marcia Stern, director Senior Adults Programs The first joint Sr. Adult week end was held with the Charleston JCC Sr. Adults, January 18-20. The Seniors, under the leader ship of Marcia Stem (Charlotte) and Mindy Seltzer (Charleston) enjoyed a Shabbat Dinner and Service, tour of Charlotte and the Mint Museum, dinner and guitar concert by Katheryn Lebeau, and a lovely brunch. The participants enjoyed making new friends and plan ning our visit to Charleston. Mindy Seltzer, director of the Charleston JCC Adult and Sr. Adult programs, met Marcia Stern at a conference sponsored by the JCC Association in St. Louis. They became fast friends and tossed around the idea of an exchange program. Dates were set and the weekend be came a reality. This weekend Maurice A. Weinstein, a Charlotte lawyer, has served as chairman of the International Council of B’nai B’rith. He also served as chairman of the Coor dinating Board of Jewish Organ izations with consultative status at the United Nations. He has appeared before the Foreign Relations Committees of the U.S. Senate and also the Foreign Affairs and Foreign Operations Committee of the House of Representatives. He has been an ardent student of the Middle ** East and the United Nations. Come benefit from his enthusi asm and years of study as he shares his perspective with our audience. Dessert and coffee will follow the lectures. We’re sure you’ll want to stay and shmooz. All this for such a nominal fee! JCC/Golden Circle Theatre Present Outstanding Productions Three of the lovely Charleston Srs. who enjoyed the weekend. Adults together. Many of the participants had never attended a JCC sponsored activity. Other weekends like this are planned including a trip to Columbia and Charleston. Many thanks to Evelyn Berger for her help obtaining donations for goody bags given to the participants, door prizes and donations for the Sunday Brunch. Thank you to Hushie program brought over 35 Senior Silverstein for her help during the entire weekend. A special thank you to Penny Eisenberg for the lovely dessert she baked and donated. Juanita Sturdi vant, cook and kitchen steward at the JCC, and Frank Roth schild, JCC driver, were both tremendously helpful and sup portive during the planning and the weekend. Tickets are still available for the three remaining plays cos ponsored by the JCC and the Golden Circle Theatre for their annual fundraising. “The Lion in Winter” by James Goldman, a historical drama that recounts the passion ate story of King Henry H and Eleanor of Aquitaine, will be performed on March 14, 16, 21, 23 and 24. “Rashomon,”by Faye and Michael Kamin, is an imag inative drama, based on a Jap anese folk tale. It suggests that there are three sides to every story: her version, his version. and the truth. It will be per formed on Apr. 11, 13, 18, 20 and 21. “Private Lives” by Noel Coward, a comedy of sophisti cated wit which is about a game of marital “musical chairs” played by a pair of newlywed couples, will be presented on May 2, 4,9, 11 and 13. All performances are at Sha lom Park in Gorelick Hall at 8:15 p.m., except Sunday mati nees at 2 p.m. Single tickets may be purchased at the JCC recep tion desk or at the door: $ 10 each I $9 each for students, sr. citizens and JCC members.
