HaLailah has completed its six-week commitment to “Read Up Books to Families.” Since it has been so successful, we have decided to continue working with one day-care center. During his recent diplomatic mission to the Middle East, the U.S. Secretary of State planted the James Baker Peace Tree at the ORT Braude International Institute of Technology in Karmiel to symbolize the hope for lasting peace between Israel and her Arab neighbors. “I found the students at ORT Braude to be very optimistic about Israel’s future,” said Baker. SOMEWHERE IN ISRAEL — Israeli police inspect damage from an Iraqi Scud missile that all but destroyed a Histadrut-operated medical clinic. In all, eight Histadrut health institutions have been “severely damaged” by Scud missiles. The U.S. labor federation said it would launch a fundraising campaign to help rebuild the damaged medical centers. At the same time, AFL-CIO President Lane Kirkland announced a “solidarity mission” of U.S. labor leaders that would leave soon for Israel in expression of the longstanding and close ties between the American and Israeli labor movements.
