Comparative
Religions
The response to the first two
seminars on comparative religions
was extremely well received by the
community at large. The course,
designed by Jeffrey F. Meyer,
Chair of the Department of Reli
gious Studies, draws on the excel
lent UNCC Religious Studies
faculty.
Jeff Meyer will be the lecturer
for all four classes in the third
seminar. Jeff received his Ph.D
from the University of Chicago in
1973, in the history of religions,
and has been teaching at UNC
Charlotte since that time. His spe
cial interests in teaching and re
search have been in Chinese and
East Asian religion and culture. He
has lived in Taiwan and China for
over two years, most recently
spending 6 months in Baoding
(Charlotte’s sister city near
Beijing) studying the teaching of
morality in Chinese elementary
and secondary schools. He has
published books and articles on
various aspects of Chinese religion
and culture. In 1990 he and his
wife adopted a Chinese child
which he calls his most important
Asian project. Jeff lectured on
Catholicism during the first series
and was a captivating speaker.
The third seminar will cover
the religions of East Asia. The
Chinese Religions of Taoism, Con
fucianism, and Chinese Buddhism,
as well as Shinto, Zen and Pure
Land religions will be discussed.
The last evening will explore
methods of meditation so make
sure to wear comfortable clothing.
The fourth seminar will cover
contemporary issues in religion. It
will cover everything from Reli
gion and women’s issues to Reli
gion, race and ethnicity. The
specific topics will be announce at
a later date.
All classes will, again be on
Thursdays. Seminar three will be
held on February 16th & 23rd, and
March 2nd and 9th. The fourth
seminar will be held March 23rd
and 30th, and April 6th and 13th.
Cost per four week seminar will
be $25.00.
