JCC CAMP SHALOM '97 SH CHARLOTTE JEWISH SINGLES Charlotte Jewish Singles- Growing & Adding New Events by Darren Mond The Charlotte Jewish Singles (CJS) is offering more events for its rapidly growing population. Several new members in the community have helped to increase the average atten dance of our events to an all time high. The group recently merged with the J.A.M.S. group to form one singles group for all Charlotte Jews aged 21 and over. To better serve participants, a CJS web site (http://www.geocities.com/Paris/708 S/ncinfo.htm) has been established, and several new activities are being planned this year. Over the past two years. Dinner for Six has been a fiin way to meet peo ple in smaller groups. A new program called "Dinner wi^ a Twist" is now taking place. The participants meet at a restaurant and get to dine with an array of guests as seating arrange ments change after each course. The first two dinners for the spring are at Patou and Cotton Street Diner, with more dinners l>eing planned in the upcoming months. April saw CJS participate in the "Walk for the Cure" for Juvenile Diabetes, and a lecture series is being planned for the fall of '91. Other community activities will be added to the schedule at the regular planning meetings. In addition to the very pop ular annual dances, a regional "Bam Blast" has been added to the calendar this May. In the past three years, the participation of Jewish singles from Raleigh, Greensboro and other area ciriM has in-Teascd. A number of national events are on the singles' calendar. A contingent of Charlotteans will be going to the National Jewish Singles Convention in Dallas in early May, a white water rafting trip to the French Broad River is taking place in July and a group will travel to the Sun n' Fun weekend in Virginia Beach in August. ^ B-B-Q at Carrigan Farms Monday, May 26 • 12:00 Noon - ? Carrigan Farms (1-77 N to exit 36, bear right, go 5.2 miles, "Carrigan Farms" on left) Spend Memorial Day at this beauti ful rock quarry located in Moorseville, NC. Doug Carrigan and his staff will serve us a fabulous lunch with chick en, fresh vegetables and fruit grown right on his farm. There is a large grassy area with lounge chairs and also a beach volleyball court. Bring a towel and bathing suit for a great day of fun! Rain or shine! Advance cost is $10 for JCC members and $13 non members. Cost that day is $13 for members and $15 for ncm-members. TENNIS ROUND ROBIN Tuesday, May 13 • 6:30 pm JCC Tennis Courts Doug Maynard, the JCC's ten nis pro, will direct a round-robin tournament with the high man/high woman scorer each receiving a 1/2 hour private tennis lesson. YOU MUST R.S.V.P. with a check by Monday, May 12 for us to prop erly organize this event!! Rain date is Tuesday, May 20, DINNER WITH A TWIST Wednesday, May 28 • 6:15 pm Cotton Street Diner (2140 South Blvd.) This is the second in this new pro gram designed to give you the oppor tunity to dine with an array of guests. For each course, seating arrangements will change. Join us for a feast of culinary delights! Cost is $27 which includes a 4-course meal, tax and gra tuity. Deadline to sign up is Friday, May 16, 1997. HAPPY HOUR Wednesday, May 21 • 6:30 pm Village Tavem-Rotunda Building. Southpark We'll meet on the patio for drinks, conversation, and possibly dinner. “WHAT’S SO FUNNY ABOUT BEING SINGLE” Thursday. May 22 • 8:00 pm Temple Israel Scott Friedman, motivational speaker (and Jewish single) combines humor, mixers and networking to leave attendees feeling better about themselves and being single. ADULTS YIDDISH IN CHARLOTTE The Charlotte Yiddish Institute, sponsored by the Jewish Community Center of Charlotte, is a nationally recognized annual event that takes place at the beautiful Wildacres retreat set in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. Yiddishkeyt abounds with an outstanding professional faculty leading Yiddish language classes, concerts, folk singing and dancing, Yiddish culture workshops, daily religious services and MORE! Individuals dedicated to enhancing their knowlege and use of the Yiddish language and culture in a stimulating, heymish atmosphere are encouraged to participate in this tremendous event. The Yiddish Vinkl, created by the founders of the Charlotte Yiddish Institute, is a local group that meets at the JCC from September through June on the first Tuesday of the month at the at 7:30 in the evening. The pur pose of the Yiddish Vinkl is to enable individuals who love Yiddish to come together to leam, practice and enjoy "Mame-Loshen" in a warm and friendly atmosphere.
