Teams were formed by a tournament com mittee to insure fair and equitable play. A round-robin format was used to provide a maxi mum amount of match play. The team of Don Effren and Marty Forcina emerged as the tourna ment champions with a hard- fought victory over the team of Andy Baron and Ivan Kirsh, 9-15, 15-11, 11-8. Both the victorious team and the runner-ups all received hand some, golf-style printed shirts. The champions will also have their names engraved on a permanent plaque which will be mounted by the JCC's racquetball courts. Many thanks to Dr. Phil Solomon for his assistance and to all of the tournament players for an excellently played inaugural tournament. Tournament players included: Andy Baron, Don Effren, Marty Forcina, Dr. David Framm, Steve Garfinkel, Ivan Kirsh, Ray Kopecky, Walter Schecter, Mike Schreibman and Ed Stemborowski. Although the championship tro phy was just out of reach, the Charlotte team did win the conso lation bracket with a dramatic "come from behind" overtime vic tory against a tough Richmond team. Scott Hirsch's 3 p>ointer sent the game into overtime and Keith Kaplan's crucial free throws in overtime sealed the victory. David Van Glish lead the team in scoring with 21 points, while Hirsch added 15 and Kaplan grabbed 15 rebounds. "We never gave up", a tired Kaplan said after the game. "Our fans were the dif ference. They provided the inspi ration for the comeback." He was referring to his wife, father, sister and assorted cousins who made the six-mile trek to the game. Many of these same players will be competing in another adult tournament in early April in Charleston, SC. Hopefully, this will give everyone enough "rest time"! Congratulations, guys.
