The Charlotte Jewish News - June-July, 1997 - Page 10 Mazel Tov & Congratualtions Poetry Prize The poem entitled "whispers" by Rochel Groner which appeared in the May issue of the CJN won first prize at the Holocaust Center in Pittsburgh, PA. Ms. Groner read her poem at the Holocaust Remembrance Day in Pittsburgh, to an audience of over two thousand people. She is the daughter if Rabbi Yossi and Mariashi Groner. Commencement Address Ms. Patricia Ades delivered the commencement address at the Boston University Law School on May 17. Art Prize David Zelicicson, son of Dick and Barbara Zelickson, was awarded second place for the Ninth Congressional District in the "An Artistic Discovery" Congressional Art Competition, an annual contest for high school students. David, a senior at Charlotte Country Day, submitted a work entitled, Monkey Two. Governor's School of North Carolina Carri Jacobsohn and Erin Naman have been selected to attend the Governor's School this summer. The school is the oldest state-wide summer residential program for academically gifted high school students in the nation. UNC Outstanding Senior Seth Nore has been named an Outstanding Senior at UNC Chapel Hill. The award is given to those students who have shown outstanding leadership, motivation and dedication. Nore is the son of Mr. And Mrs. Norman Nore of Charlotte. Number One Rated Show Congratulations to Kara Silverstein of Atlanta, GA. Ms. Silverstein is a news producer for WSB TV channel 2 in Atlanta. Her news program which airs Monday-Friday from 5:00 AM to 7:00 AM, was rated number one in the nation for news programs prior to 7:00 AM during the February television sweeps. Kara, 24, is a graduate of Emory University. She is the daughter of Gary and Maxine Silverstein and granddaughter of Hushie Silverstein of Charlotte. All-Star Scholars Jill Zukerman, Emily Bedrick and Karyn Fein have been named Charlotte- Mecklenburg All Star Scholars for 1997. Jill, daughter of Michael and Suzan Zukerman, attends West Charlotte High School. Karyn, daughter of Mark and Donna Fein, attends Providence High, and Emily, daughter of Jim and Adele Bedrick, attends Charlotte Country Day. Emily has also been nominated for "Senior of the Year." Receives JD Brian Cari Bernhardt, son of Barbara and Robert Bernhardt, graduated with Honors from the University of Michigan Law School with a JD Degree. He will be associated with the Atlanta law firm of Sutherland, Asbill and Newton. New Arrivals Congratulations to Laura and Kevin Sabota on the birth of a baby girl. Amber Marie, bom on May 6, 1997. Kevin is an employee at the Jewish Community Center. Under The Chupah 5 Rachel Tamar Klein and Lawrence Charles Berendt were married March 30, 1997, at the Jericho Jewish Center, Jericho, New York. Rabbi Fabian Schonfeld of The Young Israel of Kew Gardens Hills performed the ceremony. Rabbi Moshe Turk of the Jewish Heritage Center of Queens read the Ketubah. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard A. Klein of Charlotte. Her grandparents are Mrs. Rhea Tannen of Hampton, Virginia, and the late Joseph Tannen, and Mr. and Mrs. Walter J. Klein of Charlotte. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. David Berendt of Kew Gardens Hills, New York. He is the grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. Aryeh Leib Kon and the late Mr. and Mrs. Eliezer Berendt. Bridesmaids were the brides two sisters, Deborah Klein and liana Klein, and her friends Jennifer Bell, Melanie Hicks, and Suzie Revkind. Flower girls were the bride's neices, Kyla and Marissa Arager of Yorktown, Virginia. Groomsmen were the bride's brother, Andrew Klein, and the groom's friends Stephen Rusgo, Steven Pollan, J. David Kesiler, Jeffrey Mann and Jeffrey Foote. Ring bearer was the,bride's nephew, Joseph Rosenberg, of Wilmington, E)elaware. The bride is a graduate of Providence Senior High School in Chariotte and Queens College, Queens, New York. She is currently teaching school in Queens. The groom graduated from high school in Israel. He then served three years with the Israeli Defense Forces as a paratrooper. While Rachel was in Israel during her year with Hadassah Year Course she met Larry. They both returned to America the same summer and entered college. Larry graduated from Cobleskill State University, Cobleskill, New York. The couple spent the holiday of Pesach on their honeymooon at a glatt kosher resort at Yellowstone National Park. They are residing in Kew Gardens Hills until September, at which time they will move to London, England, when the groom enters the Royal Veterinary College of the University of London. ^ Libby Sutker Post and Jonathan Alan Post of Salisbury, NC are the proud parents of Abraham Louis Post. Abraham was bom at Carolinas Medical Center on April 17, 1997 and weighed 7 pounds 5 ounces and was 19 1/2 inches long.
