The tragic events of September 11 touched the students of CHS, as they touched all Americans. Spearheaded by the Rabbis from both temples, our stu dents participated in a service to remember the victims of the terrorist attack. On Wednesday, September 13, students gathered at Temple Beth El to pay tribute to The "Making Friends with Israel" eighth grade class. those lost or wounded. Their prayers and original thoughts helped all those present to cope with the tragedy. This year, CHS students are joining the Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte and participat ing in the “Friends and Kin” program. The students in Guy Pearlman’s Making Friends With Israel class will share ideas and information with a class of their peers in Hadera, Israel. Hopefully, lifelong friendships will be made, as well as an ongoing relation ship with the State of Israel. CHS is the place to be on Wednesday night. From among them no fewer than 13 teenagers volunteered to fight for the Confederacy. They became heroes, wrote diaries, were taken prisoner, died of wounds and disease — or lived to raise families here. For the first time in 136 years the Charlotte Jewish community is going to honor those 13 boys at 2:00 PM Sunday, November 18. Rabbi Murray Ezring and Cantor Elias Roochvarg of Temple Israel will perform the religious ceremonies. Larry Walker will lead more than 50 uniformed descendants of Confederate sol diers in military ceremonies. Mayor Pat McCrory has been invited to speak. Educators, historians, civic and .eligious leaders of all faiths are also being invited to the Hebrew Cemetery at 1908 Statesville Road. Two monuments will be dedicated: a large memorial to all 13 soldiers and a special one at the grave of Captain Julius Roessler, the highest ranking Civil War Charlotte soldier. An unforgettable moment will happen when two living grand children of Captain Roessler — Alice Dukoff and Bill Grimes — appear to pay homage to their hero grandfather. ^ Brownlee Jewelers, Archadeck of Charlotte, Mariott Executive Park, MGB Accessories, Vein Clinics of America, Lions and Tigers and Bears, Plej’s.
