The Charlotte Jewish News - December 2006 - Page 3 Federation 101: How Federation Strengthens Our Community Last month, you read about the rich history of the Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte. Our mission to raise and distribute funds to support and enrich the lives of Jews makes Federation the center for Jewish philanthropy. Through education, planning and community building, the Federation ensures that Jewish values, goals, traditions and connections are preserved for current and future generations. Here’s how: Community Building Bernstein Leadership Group Functioning as the community convener, Federation creates a roadmap for the future of our community via initiatives such as Strategic Planning, Demographic Studies, Community Relations Council, Specialty Task Forces, President’s Council and Rabbi & Executive Director Council. In its sixth year, the Bernstein Leadership Group inspires and educates young Jewish profes sionals to become tomorrow’s lay leaders. Federation’s Outreach initiatives serve as cata- Newcomer Schmooze lysts to increase awareness of the Federation and the Jewish community at large. Federation’s Newcomer Schmoozes, Uptowner’s, Shalom Baby and Young Adult programming all serve to grow the Federation donor base and engage a larg er audience of community members. Participation in community-wide programming such as Purim, Yom Ha’atzmaut, Yom Hashoah, Tu B’shevat and Hanukkah celebrations enables Federation to deepen our relationship with our constituents. Israel Advocacy and Awareness ^jQ^^tand witaTsiael Israel Rally Enriching the community through Israeli cul tural, political and historical speakers and events serves to connect Charlotte’s Jews to our home land. Through Federation’s sponsorship of the Community Shlicha (emissary), we bring Israel directly to Charlotte. The Shlicha, partnering with Federation’s beneficiary agencies, synagogues and individuals, creates a link to Israel that res onates throughout our entire community. Partemship 2000 (P2K) connects Charlotte Jews to Israeli Jews in Hadera. Through direct Yom Ha 'Atzmaut people-to-people connections. Federation has fos tered a link to Israel. Lasting friendships and pro fessional relationships have been established through exchanges of students, teachers, law enforcement professionals and women’s forum mentors. Mission trips offer our community the oppor tunity to experience the majesty of Israel first hand. These life-changing journeys inevitably serve to renew the faith and rejuvenate the com mitment of all participants, further serving to pro mote and perpetuate our Jewish identity. Fundraising The Main Event Super Sunday Federation’s Annual Campaign raises and distributes millions of dollars to sup port and enrich the.lives of Jews locally, nationally, in Israel and around the world. No other fundraising effort does so much to ensure that Jewish values, goals and tra ditions are preserved for current and future generations. The Federation Allocations process ensures strong stewardship and fiscal accountability to our donors and beneficiary agencies. Without their absolute trust and confidence, Federation’s fundraising efforts would not succeed. Annual Campaign distributions help sustain and promote Jewish education, Jewish identity, health and human services, community development, and outreach/leadership. For a full listing of beneficiary agencies see page 6. Federation rapidly responds to Jewish emergencies around the world via special fundraising campaigns such as the Israel Emergency Campaign and Operation Promise. ^ Federation’s financial future is secured in part through Endowments and Planned Gifts. Federation’s efforts to secure these generous gifts will ensure that our com munity’s needs are met long after our lifetime and that our donors’ philanthropic legacies will be remembered in perpetuity. We are proud of our accomplishments, but temper this pride with the knowledge that there is more to be done. In next months CJN, we will shape Federation’s future as envisioned in the 2003 Community Strategic Plan and in response to the grow ing needs of our community and its benefi ciary agencies.
