Wishing for peace and knowledge Student fights homophobia...Magic John son announces he is HIV-i-...Catholic bishops say only “safe sex” is abstinence...Fox TV accepts condom ads...biblical scripture pos ing as TV commercial condemns homosexuality...December 1 is World AIDS Day. Can you imagine—we have a day to com memorate AIDS, a day the world observes. Maybe in 5 or 10 or 15 years when AIDS has a vaccine, weTl still keep December 1 as World AIDS Day andrememberall the death, political infighting, and homophobia we ex perienced in the 1980’s and 1990’s. The buzzword during the past month has been education. How do we educate young people about safe sex? Is safe sex abstinence orprotection from condoms? WatchtheTV— sex sells. Now we’re hearing sex kills. If you are confused as adults, imagine what a teen ager is going through. Recently I attended a dinner party. Magic Johnson’s name came up. AIDS. Education. Homosexuality. All distinct issues but inex tricably entwined. A colleague began talking about his right to privacy when it come to letting his co workers know he was gay. After all, it was his livelihood, and if it got out, business would erode and was that fair to him? No, it’s not fair. My colleague went on to say that educa tion was the only way to eliminate fear and build understanding. Yes, absolutely. My colleague had recently overheard a co worker comment that she knew that a sales man visiting the office was gay by the way he moved. My colleague didn’t say anything. Nothing to stop the stereotype. Nothing to educate this woman about gay people. Noth ing. I have two conflicting emotions about this scenario. The first is anger—that he would talk about education and then do nothing to educate. After I calm down, I am saddened by his choice, knowing I have made the choice in my past, knowing that many other people make the same choice. Therefore, by our silence, we condone the misperceptions of gay people that are part of our culture. Courage and care I get somewhat disheartened when I hear stories like this from friends and colleagues. As editor. I’ve had the opportunity to read hundreds of articles over the past year about discrimination, hate, fear, and violenceagainst gays and lesbians. I’ve also been privileged to read about the extraordinary courage and care individuals across the country, nay world, have provided in their community to fight for equal human rights. I support my colleague, though I may not agree with his choice. Now it is up to me to “educate” him, and hope that he takes my views and rethinks some of his choices. Per haps some day he, along with hundreds of others, will be strong enough to add their voices to the injustice, and a better world will finally come. Many years ago while working the sum mer stock circuit, a wonderful person and actress left this message on the callboard: “Fear knocked on the door. Faith answered. No one was there.” It was a very powerful message to me, and I have used it often to remind me that most things are not as daunt ing as they seem. Now I pass the saying on to you with hopes and wishes that your holiday season is one of peace and joy. A wish that you find what you need to create your own everlasting happiness. A wish that homopho bia will end—especially among gay people— and that we will live in harmony. A wish for your good health, and a hope that you will use your body and mind to do good for yourself and others. May the universe protect you, guide you, teach you and love you always. —Dan Kirsch, Editor DECEMBER SUN MON I0:45A MCCtTharloMe Msh GROW Brandi Buddies - Wttralneton I5P Bryant Pnrfc SodatOub 6:45PNcw LtfeMCt: 7PMCC Hickory 7:30PMCC Chariotte THE MONTH’S 1 World AIDS Day Open House at MAP and Red Cross; House of Mercy p>erformanee S.A.L.G.A (Asheville) 5P Lutherans Concerned 8 Triad Coalition protest at Cracker Barrel Asheville Gay Men's Chorus Christmas Concert 8 pm NC L/G PoUtical Action Agenda meets 6:30P Integrity 15 IP O.W.L Meeting at Liaisons 376-4745 8P Covered dish at New Life MCC 22 MCC Chariotte Pot Luck after morning service @ 12:30 563-5810 7PGROW- Wilmington 7:30P Time Out Youth Croup 9P Bowling Ix«gue Coiiseiitn Lanes HAPPENINGS MAP Board Meeting.
