When a rambunctious eight-year- old tomboy, Ernestine “Teen” Miller, is taught by her father that she can become anything she Wants, she soon learns that there is only one exception to this rule. She cannot, under any circumstance, marry the little girl next door. See what happens when Teens desires and hopes crash against the social limitations of her parent’s world. Maid of Honor (US, NR, 1999, 25 min, 35mm) Serena, the Maid of Honor at her friend Tisha’s wedding, has decided that monogamy is an unrealistic expectation in today’s world. Serena and her partner, Donielle, have a com mitted relationship, but one that is sexually open. The bride has a traditional relationship, but is also willing to cheat on her fiance with Serena. Throughout the weekend, Serena comes to the realization that there is a gap between the ritual of a wedding and a true commitment. Unable to come to terms with her own non- tradirional lifestyle nor the construct of mar riage, Serena attempts to carve out a place for herself in a world where simple romance seems to no longer exist. Viewer’s Guide: Mature themes. 1:15pm Finding North (US, NR, 1999, 100 min, 35mm) Fletcher Hall Rhonda (Wendy Makkena, Sister Act), a lonely, big-haired bank teller from Brooklyn who’s rrying to escape an overbearing mother and rootless existence, finds a Prince Charm ing 0ohn Benjamin Hickey, Love! Valor! Com passion!). He’s naked and dangerously close to jumping oflf the Brooklyn Bridge. In Travis, she sees a golden opportunity to save a lost soul and perhaps find love. There’s only one prob lem: he’s gay. Her attempts to rescue him from himself soon take them on a poignant road trip ^ across the plains of Texas on a scavenger hunt * designed by Travis’ deceased lover, Bobby. It’s a final chance to come to terms with the past and a touching story about two unlikely people who prove to be each other’s salvation. Shot on lo cation in Texas and Manhattan. The fun begins when the handsome Taiwanese neighbor down the hall invites him over for dinner. A playful look at how cupid challenges our preconceived notions of love. Directed by Raymond Yeung. Viewer’s Guide: language. Achilles Even Stephen (US, NR, 1999, 24 min, 35 mm) A romantic comedy set at a highly uncon ventional memorial service for everyone’s best friend, Stephen (Bruce Vilanch). While Jerome attempts to write the perfect eulogy for the man who was the “Dolly Levi in his life, an eclectic group of friends (including champagne-guz- aling starlets, a flamboyant party planner, a New Age sj)iritualist. Mormon drag queens and ex- hoyfriends) gathers to celebrate Stephen’s life. Even from the grave, his friends soon learn that Stephen’s matchmaking skills are intact. Di rected by Mary-Pat Green. Katie, a lading pop star returns home from 10 years in La wanting to take a break from her longtime (niarried) boyfriend; Katies oldest friend, Stephen, is struggling to solidify a relationship 'vith his young lover, Mark, who lives in a daze ®f drugs and alcohol; and Fig and Sally are two r^arefree young lesbians who play in a band, enjoying very playful lives. On one emotion- ^ly-charged weekend, these friends meet at a Leach house to re-evaluate their lives...and pos sibly reinvent themselves. Directed by Garth Maxwell. On December 1, Jonathan meets Toby, a fresh-faced guy from Arkansas who just moved to New York. Now he has 24 nights to find out if Toby might be his Christmas present. There’s just one small problem: Toby’s boyfriend! What results is an edgy, romantic comedy about a three-man love triangle and the realization that Santa does ex ist. Directed by Kieran Turner. Viewer’s Guide: Language and mature themes. 5:30pm Gendernauts (German and English dia logue, NR, 1999,86 min, 35mm) Fletcher Hall A winner at the 1999 Berlin Film Festival, Gendernauts is an imaginative new documen tary by Monika Trent about people who alter their minds and bodies with new technologies and chemistry. We get to know San Francisco’s leading gender mixers: Texas Tomboy and his video art: Hilda, an intersexed woman happily inhabiting the middle ground between male and female; sex goddess Annie Sprinkle, and many others. In a time when masculinity and femininity are still thought to determine our identifies, Gendernauts is a mesmerizing look at the “gender elimination phenomena” that focuses on a handful of travelers. Viewer’s Guide: Mature themes and nudity. 7:15pm Steam (Italian and Turkish w/English sub titles, NR, 1998,96 min, 35mm) Cinema One From the Director’s Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival comes this lush and beautifully- photographed drama about sexual awakenings in a foreign land. When Francesco inherits a dilapidated Turkish bath from a forgotten aunt, he leaves his wife Marta in Rome and heads to Istanbul to dispose of the property. But when Francesco sees the bathhouse, he falls in love with the fading culture it represents. He also falls in love with the caretaker’s beautiful son, Mehmet. Everything seems to be going smoothly until a greedy real estate conglomer ate wants his land and Marta comes for a sur prise visit. Originally Turkey’s nominee for the Best Foreign Film Academy Award until the Ministry of Culture pulled it because of its bi sexual hero. Directed by Ferzan Ozpetek. Viewer’s Guide: Mature themes and brief nudity. 7:30pm Edge of Seventeen (US, NR, 1998,100 min, 35mm) Fletcher Hall Winner of the Best Film Award at Outfest, Los Angeles’ gay and lesbian film festival, in 1998. The summer of 1984 was about as 80s as the 80s ever got. Stuck right in the middle of it is Eric Hunter, awaiting his high school se nior year and passing the summer by working at the local amusement park with his best friend Maggie. Also working at the park is hunky Ohio State student Rod who endlessly flirts with Eric. Confused, terrified and exhilarated by his at traction to Rod, Eric begins using the clothes, attitude and hair care products of the era to express the new person he’s becoming. Directed by David Moreton and featuring Lea DeLaria. Caught in an elaborate tale of distrust and desire with another time trav eler, Drew, Tucker is murdered. Now Drew must unravel the web of love, time and betrayal that connects her to an unhappy past and a menacing future. A deliciously deviant, seduc tively offbeat, arid very 90s nod to lesbian chic.
