T AUGUST 28 . 2004 • Q-NOTES Q-Living 29 ut on video 'Showboy' a mockumentary about Hollywood reality by Steve Warren The best and worst thing about “Showboy” is how believable it is. Phony reality shows and staged documentaries have made it difficult to know the truth when we see it and this piece of “faction" blurs the line further. in the guise of a verite documentary it presents'co-directors Christian Taylor and Lindy Heymann (who wrote the scripted portions with pro- ______________ ducer )ason Buchtel) as themselves — or a fictional version of themselves — surrounded by other people (including Whoopi Goldberg, Alan Ball and the pre-accident Siegfried & Roy) playing — or being — themselves. Roy is polite, Siegfried isn’t. The storyline is that Taylor, an Englishman in Hollywood, is fired from his job as a writer for “Six Feet Under” while Heymann’s British crew is filming him for a documentary. He doesn’t tell them he’s been fired, although they know; in fact their bosses want a “down and dirty’’ wrapup that makes Hollywood look heartless. Taylor keeps them shooting by saying he’s writing a “Vegas action script" during his sum mer hiatus and is doing research by pretending to be an aspiring showboy. He takes dancing lessons, although at around 30 he’s getting a late start, goes on auditions and generally lives the life. That he’s gay is almost incidental until dancer Adrian Armas catches his eye (and ours) at a rehearsal. Taylor’s clumsy pursuit of Armas makes for some of the film’s funni est scenes — and its sexiest dance num ber, when our hero manages to get a “pri vate lesson.” Aging showboy Erich Miller, with whom Taylor shares a house for a time, has most of the best lines. Taylor, who bears some resemblance to James on “Boy Meets Boy,” is too short (5’9”) and not buff enough to be a showboy, but as Whoopi tells him, "No dream is crazy if you want to live it.” She suggests he try out for the drag extravaganza “Boylesque.” “You could do Lulu or Annie Lennox,” says Goldberg. He lies about his height, bleaches his hair and at one point considers getting liposuction. That would be good research if he wanted to write for "Nip/Tuck.” Maybe "Showboy” seemed so believ able because I’ve known guys like Christian Taylor. I’ve dated guys like Christian Taylor.
