N.C. man makes hit at Sundance
PARK CITY, Utah — Director Tim
Kirkman (pictured), who hails from
Wingate, debuted his film, “Loggerheads,”
at the recent Sundance Film Festival, the
independent film industry’s annual celebra
tion.
Filming took place in North Carolina,
which created painful memories for the
director. He remembered his youth, a time
wrought with fear of
coming out. Even
though it was diffi
cult for Kirkman, he
still, holds a great
love for the state,
calling it home.
The film is
inspired by true
events. It inter
weaves three stories, each in a different
year on a Mother’s Day weekend in N.C.
One depicts the return of Grace to her
hometown to stay with her mother and
search for a child she secretly gave up for
adoption. Another tells of Mark’s journey to
save endangered turtles at a small coastal
town. The final storyline is about Elizabeth,
who is wrestling with standing by her min
ister husband’s beliefs or taking a stand on
her own. The film has a subtle theme of
homophobia woven throughout.
Kirkman explores the layers of emotion
alism and examines the need for family
through this film.
The cast includes Bonnie Hunt, Kip
Pardue, Tess Harper, Michael Learned,
Michael Kelly and Chris Sarandon.
Kirkman’s documentary “Dear Jesse,”
which contrasted his life with that of Sen.
Jesse Helms, premiered on HBO/Cinemax’s
Reel Life, where it received an Emmy nomi
nation for writing, and was released theatri
cally in 1998. During filming he met a
woman whose son died from AIDS compli
cations. That encounter created the inspira
tion for “Loggerheads.” He received his B.A.
from the School of Design at North Carolina
State University and his M.A. from the New
School for Social Research, New York, N.Y.
