University of South Carolina to offer first-ever queer lit course A course presented by the University of South Carolina and Dr. Ed Madden will exam ine the evolving representations and under standing of gay and lesbian lives through a study of significant literary and historical texts. The course will be available beginning in the Spring 2007 semester. The development of the 19th-century sci ence of sexology, public scandals such as the Oscar Wilde trial and developing gay and les bian subcultures helped to shape public under standings of sexuality and sexual identity. Madden’s course will trace the developing literary, medical and historical representations of sexual identity, with a particular focus on British and Irish literary representations of the 19th and 20th centuries. The study will include film and pulp fiction as well as literature, including founda tional texts by Radclyffe Hall, Djuna Barnes and E.M. Forster. Other authors to be stud ied will include Ann Bannon, Brendan Behan, Emma Donoghue, Michael Field, Thom Gunn, Oscar Wilde and Jeanette Winterson. Course requirements will include two short essays, a research paper, class presentations and a final exam. For more information, contact Madden at 803-777-2171 or by email at maddene@gwm.sc.edu. I Patti Austin to perform at Koger Center r I ' I I u nr'n''ir' by Mark Smith . Contributing Writer COLUMBIA — She made her debut at the Apollo Theater at age four and had a contract with RCA Records when she was only five. Quincy Jones and Dinah Washington have proclaimed themselves as her godparents. By the late 1960s Patti Austin (pictured) was a prolific session musician and commer cial jingle singer. By the 1980s she was signed to Jones’ Qwest. Records and she began having hits. She charted 20 R&B songs between 1969 and 1991 and had success on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, where she hit number one in 1981 with “Do You Love Me?’ The album containing that hit, “Every Home Should Have One,” also produced her biggest mainstream hit. “Baby, Come To Me,” a duet with James Ingram, peaked at num ber 73 on the Hot 100 in early 1982. After being featured as the love theme in a promi nent storyline on the soap opera “General Hospital,” the song re-entered the pop chart in October and went to number one in early 1983. In 1991, she recorded the duet “You Brought Me Love” with openly gay music leg end Johnny Mathis, which was received with critical acclaim. That same year she was invit ed to be a guest on a Johnny Mathis television special that was broadcast across North America. Coming up in November at the Koger Center, the jazz, R&B and dance music diva will undoubtedly take Columbia by storm. Long a friend of the LGBT community, Austin was endeared to queer fans with a number of dance music classics that kept gays and lesbians hoping on dance floors through out the ’80s.
