Page Four CLOUDBUSTER Saturday, August 21, 1943 Three Enlisted Men Selected For V-5 Aviation Cadet Training 4^ To Become V-S Cadets ANXIOUS TO FLY in Uncle Sam’s Navy the three enlisted men in the above photo will soon become V-5 aviation cadets. Pictured, left to right, they are R. G. Harris, Sm2c, J. H. Waite, Sk2c, and H. E. Falk, Sic. All Hands Now Possess Life Insurance “No officer, cadet or enlisted man at this station is without National Service Life Insurance,” Lt. (jg) C. W. Smullen, station insurance officer, announced this week. Between April 12th and August 10th 619 hands purchased insur ance to bring the total amount sold to $5,847,000. “Even the officers undergoing indoctrination and the officers here on temporary duty which are un dergoing instruction came through 100 per cent,” Lt. Smullen pointed out. “The 100 per cent record of the hands at this station indicate that they wish to provide the maximum security for their wives, children or parents,” said Lt. Smullen. “They should be congratulated for taking this thoughtful step.” BOYS' STATE (Continued from page one) the concluding session at the Caro lina Inn one week from today. Pre-Flight officers who will ad dress the group include Lt. Comdr. James P. Raugh, USNR, Execu tive Officer; Lt. Comdr. Bur ton Ingwersen, USNR, athletic director; Lt. Comdr. Lloyd R. Sauer, USNR, regimental com mander; Lt. Comdr. Howard L. Hamilton, USNR, head of aca demics; Lt. Comdr. Horace D. Crockford, USNR, Lt. Comdr. John F. Gilday, USNR, Lieut. Alexander B. Cloud, USNR, Lieut. Harlan H. Hatcher, USNR, and Ens. William 0. Shanahan, USNR, all of the academic department; Lieut. George D. Kepler, USNR, head baseball coach; Chaplain George J. Grewenow, and Lieut. P. 0. Brewer, USNR, public rela tions officer. Lt. Renwick Curry, USNR, of the Academic Department, had charge of arranging the program. Three enlisted men at this sta tion have received orders to report to the Aviation Cadet Selection Board at Dallas, Texas during the next two months after which they expect to become V-5 aviation cadets. The men—J. H. Waite, Sk3c, H. E. Falk, Sic, and R. G. Harris, Sm2c—sent in their applications several months ago, but it was only recently they were notified they had been accepted. Waite, who works in the Dis bursing Office, is scheduled to re port to Dallas on August 30th, and Harris reports a month later to the day. Falk has orders to re port on October 28th. Waite reported to Chapel Hill over a year ago as a second class seaman and applied for V-5 train ing in August of last year. He be came a third class yeoman last summer, and was later transferred to storekeeper third class. Since then he has made second class. He hails from Charleston, West Vir ginia. Both Falk and Harris are in communications, and both joking ly admitted in the Cloudbuster office that they felt they would do okay if they learned their sema phore, blinker and code. Falk hails from Toledo, Ohio via Great Lakes. He has been at Chapel Hill since March of this year. In point of service Harris leads the way having enlisted in the Navy five and one-half years ago. He saw over two years in the North Atlantic, and has been sta tioned here for the past 14 months. In answer to the routine ques tion of why they enlisted in V-5 all gave the same answer. “We’ve always wanted to fly,” they said, “and we think this is our best op portunity. We’d like to take part of our training here, but doubt if we’ll be able to.” OUTDOOR POOL (Continued from three) one. However, in looks, type of tile used, and general appearance there is little difference. The Bow man Gray Pool is 55 feet by 165 while the outdoor pool is 49 by 150. Three diving boards are located on the East end, next to Fetzer Field. A tile walk is directly around the pool to be used by swim mers only. Surrounding the whole pool and leading up to Woollen Gymnasium is a rock wall. THE FAR EAST (Continued from page one) water ports on the China coast and access to the Chinese railways, existing land routes are inade quate for the rapid prosecution of war in the Far East. Some strategists have specu lated that the first land blows against the Japanese might be delivered in Thailand. Any in vasion of Burma it is argued must be water-borne, inasmuch as Bur mese communications (the rail ways, valleys, and the Irrawaddy River) run north and south and can be assailed only from the sea. Control of Rangoon and the mouth of the Irrawaddy might lead to a profitable attack on the Thai coast, where flatter terrain offers more opportunity for mechanized forces. From Thailand a power ful leverage can be exerted on Singapore while ports in Indo- China could be brought under at tack. Such an operation would not only open up the Indies but would expose the Philippines and gain an adequate supply route to em battled China. Military operations of this scope presuppose vast Anglo-American land armies and air fleets. Much hard fighting would occur before the Chinese army came into play. If Russia should enter the war the task would be lightened but the conduct of our operations would remain much the same. Fox Movietone Films Activity Here National movie audiences will soon get a glimpse into Pre-Flight life here as a result of scenes photographed around the station during the past week by M. D. Cooke, cameraman for Fox Movie tone News. Among the activities filmed are views of cross country runs, box ing exhibitions, swimming, testing and work in the Victory Garden. Wednesday Evening Movies The three films scheduled for Pre-Flight personnel in Memorial Hall next Wednesday are “Iden tification of U. S. Cruisers,” “One Day of War in Russia” and “Planes of the Navy.” The show ing Vv^ill start at 1930.
