4.IR MEDAL—Above is a glimpse
of the regimental review last
Saturday morning at which
Cadet Arnold R. Zubik, of the
70th Battalion, received the Air
Medal for meritorious service as
radioman of a carrier based
plane in the Southwest Pacific.
Comdr. James P. Raugh, com
manding officer, who read the ci

Kinkaid, is shown pinning the

Cadet Zubik Is Awarded Air Medal
For Meritorious Service in Pacific
Cadet Arnold R. Zubik, 70th
Battalion member from Rich
mond, Tex., was presented with
the Air Medal in ceremonies held
before the cadet regiment here
last Saturday morning. The
award was made to the 21-year-
old Texan for meritorious serv
ice as radioman of a carrier
based plane operating against
enemy forces in the Southwest
Pacific.
The citation from Vice Admi
ral T. C. Kinkaid, Commander
7th Fleet, which was read by
Comdr. James P. Raugh, com
manding officer, declared that
“when the squadron commander
was unable to locate an enemy
force, due to inclement weather,
Zubik skillfully operated equip
ment locating them immediately.
“By giving bearing and dis
tance, he enabled the squadron
commander to commence an at
tack without being able to see
the enemy. This enabled the
commander to effect complete
surprise, reduced the period of
antiaircraft fire, and greatly as
sisted him in sinking an enemy
vessel.”
Zubik, who entered the Navy
in January, 1943, also holds the
Navy-Marine Corps Medal which
he was awarded in August, 1944.
After boot training and radio
and gunnery instruction, he went
into the Pacific aboard an escort
carrier, which supported land
ings in the Palaus and Leyte,
and which participated in the
battle of the Surigao Straits and
the battle off Samar.
