What ZD Program Will Mean To You From page 1 Program Has Two Major Goals # To instruct and inspire every person at work here to prevent errors before they occur; to encourage and lead each person to strive for ‘Zero Level’ in produc tion-job errors. To instill in every person on the job a pride of performance and craftsmanship. Individual and departmental awards are part of the continu ing program. The program includes all people working at Firestone Textiles Gastonia plant. Participation is by volunteer enlistment, by signing a card of acknowledgment which shows that a person is willing to strive for better performance. From The Division President « In a call for employees to join the effort, Mr. Mercer said the ZD plan is “a new way for improving the quality of Firestone tires and for greater job security where all of us are concerned.” He pointed out that Firestone makes many fine products but is principally recognized around the world as manufacturer of the highest-quality tires of all descriptions available today, and add ed: “Our purpose is to make these still better to morrow. “I believe you will realize this is your oppor tunity to increase your earnings, make jobs easier for you and your fellow workers, and at the same time help your company in the im provement of its products.” Mr. Mercer said new machinery is being in stalled in our various plants and better manufac turing methods are being developed universally. “The ZD program in Firestone Textiles plants will improve quality of our tire cord fabric. It is to your advantage to help this important pro gram succeed. I sincerely hope each of you will pledge your support. . ZD Plan And Achievement Awards • The pro gram functions under a ZD committee coordi nated by Mr. Yelton. A manual for employees and one for supervisors and error/cause/identifi cation report forms are the main printed materi als for instruction, reference and carrying out the program. The error/cause/identification report is a new way a person on the job may seek out, identify and call attention to causes of defects or other suggestions on error prevention. It is one of sev eral ways of encouraging the flow of ideas be tween persons on the job and members of super vision. A major phase of the ZD program is personal recognition of those making the most effort to further aims and ideals of the ZD plan. A “Craftsman of the Month” for each division in the plant will be selected by an awards com mittee. From these winners each month will be selected a “Firestone Textiles Craftsman” to represent the entire plant operation. Each department will be in monthly competi tion for the best ZD record and all employees within a winning department will be recognized. Members of management will make quarterly, semi-annual and annual awards to the depart ment which does the most to advance the ZD program aims. These are called Operations Man ager’s Award, General Manager’s Award and President’s Award. And Now, to Sit on a Tack This Firestone secretary in Akron is sitting on one of the world's largest "thumbtacks." Commonly called "guy pins" they are used to secure tempo rary landing-strip materials in Viet Nam. The landing material, produc ed by Firestone's coated fabrics division, is made of two plies of nylon fabric, coated with neo prene rubber and bonded. Strips of the rubberized fabric are joined and then fastened to the ground with the giant tacks. The material waterproofs and prevents hazardous dust condi tions. Firestone recently received a supplementary contract for 722 runway coverings and 1,000 taxiways, increasing the total production contract to $12 mil lion. Will Haney Here Since 1935 A memorial service for Will Haney was held at New High Springs Baptist Church Jan. 15, followed by interment in Rose Hill Cemetery, Gastonia. MS in Textiles Soon at Clemson U Clemson University is devel oping a new graduate program to help meet personnel demands in today’s scientific textile in dustry. The industry needs people with advanced training for research programs particu larly. The Clemson School of In dustrial Management and Tex tile Science will begin a new degree program—the Master of Science in Textiles—next Au gust. Phenomenal growth of the textile industry and increased application of science and tech nology in manufacturing textile products over the past 10 years has created the need for spe cialized personnel, notes Dr. Wallace D. Trevillian, dean of the School of Industrial Man agement and Textile Science. “There is a need throughout the industry for people with advanced training. This need is especially acute in the ex panding research programs necessary to and characteristic of the modern textile industry,” Dr. Trevillian says. Clemson’s new graduate pro gram will emphasize technical areas of fiber science, and tex tile technology. The university already awards the master and doctorate degrees in textile chemistry. SOME BIRDS of a feather This familiar landmark with its half-million-gallon water ca pacity, primarily for fire-con- trol use at Firestone, becomes a haven of rest for starlings along about sundown the year round. Circular railing around the tank catwalk and braces and struts of the tower assume an added pattern of interest when the birds come in for a landing and brief "flock con vention" before moving on. Starlings, introduced frof* Europe into New York state 1890, have been spreading eve^ since, until now they are nati'^® to all the United States most of Canada. In some plac®j they become a nuisance even a pest. But the handsome birds a talent of musical song mimicry and do well at inse^ control. They have a short laijj plump body and (in spring a*' summer) a yellow beak. picture was made late on a in January, as the waning suP' light made a rainbow of colo^® on the birds' plumage. AF Maj.
