ECUADOREAN AIRLINE OFFICIALS STUDY PAI SETUP INTM BUSY REBUILDING 384 AS AS MODEL PATTERN FOR LATIN OPERATIONS Latin Americans shining beacon eVer-searchIng for progressive and modern Ideas in air trans- portaHon focused again on Piedmont Airlines this month in the visit of two highly ranking officials from Quito, Ecuador, S.A* Sr. Rodrigo Sonzales* Civil Aeronautics Director, Quito, Ecuador and Sr# Rene Dousdebes, Superintendent of Stations , AREA Airlines, Quito, Ecuador, have been actively observing all phases of PAI operations for the past several weeks* They came to Piedmont on the recommendation of CAA officials in Washington, to study and ob serve our procedures In an ef fort to further their operations In Ecuador. The CAA referred them to Piedmont because the scope of PAI operations, size and problems affecting an op eration the size of AREA were very similar. The rugged terrain of their country makes air travel par amount In importance because of the inadequacy of modern highways and railroads. The likable pair have gained many friends among Piedmont officials because of their interest and keen grasp of everyday airline problems and have furthered the 3ood Neigh bor program by their visit* They will return to ’'^(/ashlng- ton upon completion of their studies here, for further ob servation of CAA functions which might be adopted to their country*s air program. This Is the second time PAt has been honored by selection as a model airline for study by Latin air officials, hav ing played host to several other Ecuadorian airline leaders last year on a similar miss i on * They have been studying our traffic and ticket counter handling, recently spent some time with the operations, com munications and dispatch functions and have within the past few days been actively observing tower control In the t«rmInaI . These two operators are among the several attractions enjoy ed by INTC* -> a ’Ye DEFENSE BOND PROGRAM OFFERED PAI EMPLOYEES A plan to participate In a U.S. Savings Bond program was offered to Piedmont Aviation, Inc., employees on January 15, 1953, In cooper ation with a plan offered by all airlines through the Air Transport Association of America. To date, 20 employ ees have enrolled In the plan by authorizing regular pay roll deductions for the pur chase of bonds. The Series E Savings Bonds, which are now being issued, pays Interest at the rate of 2% which means that a bond purchased for $18.75 matures to a $25.00 value In nine years and eight months, and bonds of other denominations gain In value on the same basis* This plan Is more attractive than has been previously of fered, and al I employees who wish to do so are urged to participate. Applications for enrollment may be secured from the Accounting Office, and any further information concerning this plan will be gladly furnished upon Inquiry by T. W. Morton, Chairman of the program. -Tc -:t- *?:• «- Attitude makes the difference between a big man and a little man* NEW CENTER SECTION INSTALLED Airline Maintenance INT, is a- buzz with activity with its normal pressure of scheduled checks and engine changes being highlighted by Installation of a new center section In 384* Only received during the last few days, the new center sect ion has been installed and 384 is again standing on Its own landing gear, and at this rate speculation Is that It should be flying around the middle of Ma r c h . Maintenance personnel has in creased at all bases since the first of the year, as well as numerous promotions. The fol lowing new employees have join ed the organization: INT: Jack ‘Gardner, INT; Bob Gibson, INT; Al Lundy, Erwin, Tenn.; Jim Richardson, Ander son, S.C.; all mechanics, line maintenance; and O.N. Ziglar, INT, welder, airframe overhaul* ORf : f.T. Allman, W.H. Blood- worth, C.^. Overstreet, all of ORF - mechanics, line mainten ance; and H.L. Baum, ORF, cleaner, line maintenance. SDF : A.S, Johnston, of ORF, mechanic, line maintenance* Promotions included Ken W'hapham, sheet metal from Jr. Specialist t o Me ch a n i c Spe cialist, Feb I, INT.
