VFR with Turby THE PIEDMONT POSTMAN Now that the holidays are over, we can get down to the In come Tax Returns and the business at hand of running an air line. Our slogan for this year should be: CARRY MORE IN SIXTY-FOUR. Attended the dinner in CHO during December. Music was furnished by Bud Halsey at the piano, A1 Norvelle, electric guitar, vocals by the entire group and solos by Bill Clark. Bud and A1 are real sharp musicians. We all had a great time. At LYH, it sure was great to Delores Duff back at work after a siege of illness. JjYH boys (jJjf do a great job of refueling and getting late trips back on time — particularly 782! The day I was there, 782 was ten minutes late arriving and was out on time. Was in PHF the other night and bowled with Jane and Doug Guin. I couldn’t beat Jane, but Doug was easy to whip. The March of Dimes is going “great guns” at INT. We’ve got some real “go-getters” with George Stack, Bob Reed, Jim Bradley and others. Bob Reed has been on Radio and TV so many times promoting this worthy cause, we now look forward to viewing and listening to “The Bob Reed Show.” THAT’S A PUN, SON!!! Bill Crowe, DSM-CLT, is a father of just a few days for the first time. It’s a boy and what a proud father Bill seems to be. I think Bill said he might name him “Ole Crowe (100 Proof).” EARLY SETTLER — One who pays his bills on the second day of the month. GOSSIPING — A keen sense of rumor. HUG — A roundabout way of expressing affec tion. Dear Sir; I wish to thank, compliment, and commend Miss Karen Brown, one of your employees at the Norfolk station. She was most helpful and accommodating to my mother, who was travel ing on your airline. My mother has not traveled often and there fore is not familiar with ticket ing processes, desiring status, or NRSA rules. After failure to make her de sired connection. Miss Brown assisted her in the same manner a special representative would and for this I am most grateful. I myself am a stewardess for National Airlines and thus can more readily appreciate any ex tra effort on the part of an air line employee. Please see that Karen Brown receives a copy of this letter to show my gratitude. Thanking you for your past and present good service. Sincerely, P. B. Jacksonville, Fla. Dear Sir: It was my misfortune to be a passenger .. (on a recent) flight. I say “misfortune” because the four hour delay upset a tight schedule to the point where I will in all probability have to make an additional trip to rec tify. That airplanes suffer mechani cal failures is an acknowledged fact and I, for one, do not argue this point; that the passengers on this flight were given no as sistance in arranging other means of transportation nor even given a factual estimate of the length of the delay, I find fault with. It would seem that where a flight is delayed due to mechan ical troubles of a nature that re quires at least four hours repair, the passengers are entitled to know this right at the bat, and that certainly the assistance of your people be given these pas sengers in an attempt to get them on their way via whatever other means might be available. That a message given to your people at the desk was not trans mitted to my representative who vas waiting for me. I also con sider an unforgivable breach in the relationship that should exist between air line and pas senger. Sincerely, A. S. Denville, N. J. Dear Sir: I should like to thank the two people in your public office for their helpfulness in arranging all the bookings for my recent trip from Washington to San Francisco on a Visit U.S.A. tic ket. It must have given the gentleman a great deal of work to calculate all the moves and interchanges. Everything went without a hitch, it was a most impressive operation, and I met with great kindness from all the airport staff with whom I came into contact. There can, I realize, be hardly any financial gain to the indi vidual airlines participating in the Visit U.S.A. scheme, but in terms of the goodwill resulting, if my own experience is any thing to go by, the potential gain to the United States is incalcu lable and I wish the scheme every success in the future. Sincerely, M.F.N. London, England A i— Dear Sir: Yesterday our company ship ped a complete two-way radio system to our service station here. I was aware that the shipment had been made and via air, how ever I did not know which air- hne had carried it. This after noon I called... (another air line) and immediately found that they had not received the gear. Then at approximately 3 p.m. I called your air freight dept. I got a busy signal. After repeated calls and repeated busy signals, 45 minutes later I called your reservation desk. They switched me to operations and I advised them that the air freight tele phone was out of order. This fact had been related to me by the telephone operator when I asked her to verify the busy signal. Your operations office then in formed me that the phone was out of order, that it had been re moved from the cradle, and that the air freight personnel were busy. No, he said, he could not help me concerning air freight. I then called another Pied mont number listed and a young lady advised that they only re paired private planes. Once again I called your air freight depot and finally found that the shipment had not arrived. This evening, through an em ployee of another airline who is a friend of our local service manager, I find that the ship ment is in your hands. ... If this is standard policy with Piedmont, I would like to know of it so that I might ad vise our people. Sincerely, C. S. cMofifUf Riniluicufl JANUARY ^^ememLer WL en • • From the January, 1957 Issue The two-millionth passenger was carried the previous month. He was Pvt. J. A. Wilson of Swords Creek, Va.
