JULY, 1964 THE PIEDMONITQR PAGE FIVE PIEDMONT mss NOTES MYRTLE BEACH — Reporter Vern McCord: Everyone here at MBC is in full swing for the sum mer season. We had very good boardings for June, topping our quota by 250. Agent D. K. Jones is the proud papa of a baby girl. She was born on July 6, so congratulations to D, K. H. J. Rowe’s brother Bill from INT was here for four days. They managed to put Harold’s boat in the water and go for a short cruise. CINCINNATI-C — Reporter Jan Tuemler: The Employees’ Club held its annual picnic last month at Green Meadows, Kentucky; another big one is sched uled for Elliott’s Lake next week. Lenore Reder, CVG-R, and Bob Steppe (U. S. Army), former CVG-F, surprised us all by flying to Las Vegas and getting married. Joe Archer and John Rohling CVG-F are both proud fathers of baby boys. Rose O’Hara and Jackie Hefferman enjoyed a short stay at the Blockade Run ner in ILM. Jane Griffith spent her vacation golfing and soaking up the sun. Paul Loar and his family va cationed in Hawaii. Terry O’Connell went to LAX. Manager Ed Laskowski is recuperating with his family in Pennsylvania. CVG-R welcomes newcomer Elaine Moore from Big Bone, Kentucky. ROANOKE-F — Reporter Jeanie Dial: Since last report from ROA, Captain Redburn, his family, and Margaret Fi’anklin have vacationed in Europe. Jan Kirk and I are also among the continental set. If any PI girls are going to Roma ask us for our little black book! Joyce Reinhardt and Betty Cox won the Delta trip to SFO. They can tell you all about the Top of the Mark and about Robert Goulet being All Man. Along on the SFO trip were the Harold Gibsons and the Lionel Anders. Patsy Turner is waiting for PI to expand to HNL — she fell in love with Hawaii. Iona Carr is planning a trip to SFO this month (will she make it?). F/0 Gilbert plans to invade FLL — those poor Florida girls! Summer gave ROA a fine picnic. Congrats to Marie (Sam P.) Prillman who received her five year pin with a luncheon in INT. A warning to all crew members; when coming into ROA, beware! Hal Carter has bought an airplane and is soloing. ROA tower hasn’t been the same since. COLUMBIA — Reporter Joe Frick: We‘d like to welcome two new Agents, Jack Derrick and Jim Lang, both local CAE boys. Congratulations are in store for Barry Hurley and his wife on the birth of their new son, born June 20 while the rest 'Of us were having a party at Lake Murray. We all enjoyed the party, including Mr. O’Bryan who suffered a skinned nose on the bottom of the swimming pool. He also won the wading contest — wonder why? Our new jet runway is almost completed. Only the lighting and the ILS system are unfinished. The new terminal building is to be completed by May of ’65. For the first time at CAE we are looking forward to a steak supper for an increase in boardings over last year of this period. CHARLESTON — Reporter Ruth Shumate: Sum mer vacations are in full swing —■ non-revenues are having quite a time. It took this writer four days round-trip CRW-MBC. But it gives one a great op portunity to visit brother stations. Jerry Young is a new earner of a five year service pin. Jim McCormick and his family have returned from a camping trip to MBC in their new Oldsmobile. We’d like to welcome new Agent John Blackwell, a resident of Belle, W. Va. Phil Bostic is completing work on his camp in Poca hontas County. It will be a real “resort area” when he finishes. The Interline party in the A-irport Cloud Room was small but lively. Big news this month — Bill Hanson, Lead Agent, has been elected a delegate to the State Democratic Convention in Huntington, August 8. FAYETTEVILLE — Reporter Robert Beard: FAY had its biggest month ever in June for passenger boardings with a total of 3,531. We expect to hit 4,000 before the summer is over. Congratulations to Bob Bennington on his recent promotion to Chief Agent, FLO. Airport personnel gave Bob and his wife Kathy a going away party at the Plantation Steak House and presented them with an ice-cream freezer and monogramed serving tray. Recent vacationers include Horace Bryant and his family, who sported a new car to the beach. Bob Jackson and his family took a trip to the Great Smokies. Bill Wooten got in a little fish ing on his vacation. FAY welcomes new Operations Agent, Dean Marion. KNOXVILLE — Reporter David Anderson: Station Manager Ted Arnold celebrated his 39th (?) birthday on May 26. We at Knoxville want to welcome Ellis Berrier to the Piedmont family. Also, David Ander son has returned from a military leave of absence after serving six months with the Tennessee Air National Guard. Three PI employees at TYS have been in the hospital during the last couple of months. Fortunate ly, however, none was too seriously ill. Lead Agent Harold Giles, Norman Miller, and Ellis Berrier are all back at work and feeling better. We are looking for ward to our steak dinner compliments of the com pany for our increase in passenger boardings for the first six months of 1964. Plans are not complete but we are all getting ready for the feast. Res. Agent Marlene Robinson is on leave of absence in Florida where her father is seriously ill. COLUMBUS — Reporter Ray N. Campbell: Sta tion Manager Wallace Kerr hosted our station per sonnel to barbecue June 6. Wally, along with Paul Gustafson and Bert Carlos, spent approximately three hours preparing the chicken. It was delicious! Enter tainers “Polly Pacemaker” (Joanne Short) and Doctor “P. U.” (Bert Carlos) had the local Agents and their families feeling “barbequed-chicken-side-aches” from laughter. Nancy Douglass had another baby boy and named him Stephen Charles. Let’s hope Paul and Nancy Gustafson will be able to report by the next Piedmonitor. Orval and Shirley Sword’s trip around the world started June 18 and ended July 6. Check out the following codings to see their itinerary: CMH-LAX- HNL - TYO - HKG-GKK-NDH-BEY-LON-PAR-N YC-CMH. How’s that for a challenge? Everyone is glad to see Bert Carlos back in the old grind of things again. We have been making our quota each month and the motto, “Sell Piedmont,” seems to be our progressive cry. Thanks for the steak dinner. Sure hope Ed Las- kowski recuperates soon. Good luck, Ed, and here’s to a speedy recovery—Zip! RICHMOND — Reporter J. L. Thompson: Recent ly we had the pleasure of having the Smothers Brothers as passengers on Flight 472 to DCA. Having completed an appearance here, the boys were on a return trip to New York for a night club engagement. Pee Wee Reese also rode with us to CVG on his return to STL after a game in New York City. Those vacationing have been the Gerry Bargers, who spent practically their entire time in the INT-GSO area. The John Wiedensaul family spent their time in the Penn sylvania area visiting with relatives in and around John’s home town. It seems that John had to stay home, however, to put the finishing touches on the extensive remodeling job he has just completed. Mar gie German at RIC-C has returned from visiting folks in Baldwin, 111., and STL; Mary Harris and her family spent their vacation in Miami. RALEIGH-DURHAM — Reporter J. P. Wheeler; All of us were glad to learn that Carolyn Repass’s illness was not as serious as was expected at first. She was in the hospital a week but seems to be in fine shape now. Anne and Jack Bullock are the proud parents of their third child (all girls). RDU will not be getting a steak dinner but we did have an increase during the first six months of 1964. June was a good boarding month, but we got off to a slow start in July. LYNCHBURG — Reporter Guy Linn: Agent E. P. Bosier announced in June that he has been married since last January. We don’t understand the secrecy but would like to wish him and his bride, Carolyn, the very best of luck in the years to come. We also want to welcome Agent John Farmer to LYH. John came to us May 11 after serving with the Marines in Hawaii. Although we missed our quota this June, it was the best June LYH has had so far as passenger boardings are concerned. LYH is also proud of its 91 per cent score on the operations test. ROANOKE-M — Reporter Audrey Callahan: By the time this issue goes to press, R. E. Caudle and family will have returned from their journey to Los Angeles. Also Larry Beggs and his family will be home from their visit to Disneyland. John Rehder and his family took in the sights at the World’s Fair recently. Bill King and his wife Peggy spent a few days in Florida, and then flew over to Nassau. Yours truly spent several days in CMH attending the Billy Graham Crusade. The maintenance employees had a party at one of the local lakes. CINCINNATI-F — Reporter Merrill Gadker: Va cations are in order at CVG-F with Terry O’Connell going to San Francisco, Ron Kelly in Florida, Rosie O’Hara relaxing in ILM, and me going to summer camp in Michigan. We are happy to have two new Agents, W. L. Weber and R. W. Gutman, with us. Everybody is working hard — especially Lead Agents George Fickie and A1 Anness. Our boardings are break ing records. Chief Agent E. D. Akard is doing a fine job filling the place of Station Manager Ed Laskowski, who is feeling much better after his recent stay in the hospital. LOUISVILLE — Reporter Howard Hughes; SDF welcomes new employees Tom Duggins and Ed Dug- gins to the Piedmont family. Congratulations go to Nan and Howard Hughes on the birth of their daugh ter, Miss Amy, and to Tom and Nancy Duggins on the birth of their son Jeffrey Allen. Bobbi French has taken a leave of absence to add an addition to her family. We are happy to have Jean Baton, formerly with PAI in SDF, as her replacement. Seems quite natural to have Jean back in her old position. BLUEFIELD — Reporter Eddie Jones: Everyone enjoyed our recent banquet received as a result of our incentive program. It seems that food received under this program tastes so much better and makes us work much harder for another. We certainly enjoyed having Messrs. Turbiville, Ross, and Best join us for our banquet — even if they did accuse us of remov ing the “wet paint” signs from our ramp equipment just before they arrived. Our congratulations to Agent Gene Elmore and his new wife, the former Miss Ar- lena Stowers! The wedding bells rang on May 2, and were followed by a honeymoon to the Smokies and points south. Joe Robertson is back in full swing after six weeks of illness and says it’s fine to be back in the saddle. It seems that all the ailments piled up on Joe at once — including a tonsillectomy and a kidney ail ment. WASHINGTON — Reporter Austin Morrison; June was a good month for DCA. A record boarding of 16,137 passengers makes us a winner in the passenger boardings contest. CTO reports that they have been swamped with visiting USA passengers. Shannon Mills is temporarily filling the vacancy at CTO. Bud Halsey was recently named Chairman of ATA’s public rela tions group. Proud parents for last month are Mr. and Mrs. Ritchie Iden and Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie Rush. We are happy to have Diane Poore back with us after her leave of absence. We also want to welcome new em ployees In Operations, John Gillespie and Bob Stewart: in ticket counter, Joe Moffett, Robert Mudd, and Mark Cunningham; and in Flight Service, Carol Blevins and Susan Jefferson. Congratulations to Red SteAvart on his new position as Chief Purser, DCA. We have al ready had 14 donors to the new blood bank started for DCA employees. An experimental operations office, possibly the only one of its kind on the system, has been set up in a maintenance truck beside our gate. BALTIMORE — Reporter John Morris: Although we did not quite qualify for our steak dinner during the first half of 1964, BAL did board 1,214 during June, 14 over our quota. We are still pulling for that Steak next year, however. It was good to have Captain Dickens, F/0 Brown, and Stewardess Walker attend ing a recent buffet dinner dance. F/0 Brown was lucky enough to win a multi-purpose flashlight and Miss Walker won a set of dishes. Other door prizes went to George “Snoozer” Scherer (alarm clock), Roger Offley (portable cooler), and'Forrest Burress, LC BAL Manager (portable picnic jug). On August 1, a fish ing party out of Ocean City, Md., is being planned for all who can attend. A few of us will stay behind to mind the store. If your BAL Orioles could beat those “darn Yankees,” maybe they could win a World Series. ATLANTA-R — Reporter Joyce Thompson: The big news in ATL is our new reservations office, of which we are all proud. ATL extends an invitation to everyone to visit us and drop by our new reserva tions office. We are so very proud of our Reservations Manager, Robert Talley, who was selected by AA to represent Piedmont on a visit to the World’s Fair as a guest of AA. Our Station Manager, Bruce Parrish, returned from LAX a few weeks ago where he at tended the International Kiwanis Convention. They are not the only travelers from ATL, however. Count er Agent Margaret MacKinnon enjoyed a wonderful two weeks in Spain and Portugal. Mary Weydert and hubby spent the fourth in SJU and STT. Sandy Martin flew to DAY for the Fire Cracker 400. Beck George flew to the World’s Fair, SFO, and MEX for her va cation. Ginger Jones and Jane Kinsey also headed for the West Coast. Eddie Beard and his family have returned from water skiing and PHF this week. Makes one wonder who’s keeping the store! Welcome back to Vicki McCowan and Levy Heath, both of whom have returned from brief stays in the hospital. ATL-R welcomes Sarah Mobley, new Reservation Agent, Pas senger Service, and Bobby Turbeyfield, ticket counter. Bobby transferred from Operations to replace Jess Catline, whom we lost to the EWN JAMTO office. Leonard Martin has been promoted to Chief Agent for Passenger Service and Ticket Counter, and Robert Talley to Reservations Manager. Congratulations to you both. ATLANTA-0 — Reporter Ed Whittaker: ATL was proud of its passenger boardings for the month of June. Our quota was 600, but we topped that by an easy margin of 1,285. Passenger boardings were often over 200 a day. Welcomed to Operations is newly-em- ployed Bob Williams who replaced Bob Turbeyfield. Bob Turbeyfield transferred to Passenger Service. ATL celebrates its second year anniversary of being on the Piedmont map. Lucky ol’ Bill Robertson has started his two week vacation. He refused to say where he plans to go, but we don’t think he will stray far from Bob’s Hideaway. Lamar Burnett, Operations Agent, is taking flying lessons. Most folks won’t even ride with him in a car, but we are still wishing him luck. TCA In+erlin “You may think we forget the human element in this department, Finchley, but let me tell you, I like the way you plug it in/'
