The Datanet 30 is a solid state device, with no electronic tubes, and with a proven operational reliability of 99.9 per cent for a six month period. Although Piedmont and Burlington will be using the same computer, because of programming it will be impossible for the companies’ messages to become crossed. Programming is the long and tedious process of “feeding” in formation, codes, and appropri ate reactions into the machine. Current programming should be completed within six months, indicating a target date of July 1 for operation of the new sys tem. Qualified General Electric per sonnel will take complete care of the equipment. Amazingly, the total cost of operating com munications with the Datanet 30 will be substantially less per WIN A MUSTANG Sharpen your pencils and be gin to write. Twenty-five words is all it will take to win the 1965 Mustang offered as first prize in Lake Central’s Nord 262 con test. Other prizes include a week in Paris for two with $300 cash, two tickets to the Indianapolis “500,” and one thousand single service envelopes of Instant Maxwell House Coffee. To win, simply tell Lake Cen tral, in 25 words or less, which feature of its new French Nord 262 will most interest or be most meaningful to your customers. Mail your entry in an envelope or on a post card to Vice Presi dent—Merchandising, Lake Cen tral Airlines, Weir Cook Airport, Indianapolis, Indiana. You may enter as often as you like, but each entry must be postmarked no later than April 15, 1965, and only one prize will be awarded to an individual. month than with present equip ment. Furthermore, the cost of adding new circuits to the sys tem will be reduced from sever al hundred dollars at present to a surprisingly low $15. In addition to the computer, two other improvements in communications have been un dertaken. The first, in anticipa tion of full operation of the Da tanet 30, is the increase in speed of all private line teletype cir cuits from 75 words per minute to 100 wpm. This became effect ive the first of February. The second, the extension of Piedmont’s long line system, will not occur until sometime in the future. Management has, however, approved the addition of Columbus, Cincinnati, Hunt ington, Charleston, Louisville, and Lexington to the circuit. De lay is due to limited availability of Telpak units between the present system and the Cincin nati area. New Martins To Seat 44 Piedmont Airlines purchased two new Martin 404 aircraft the first week in February, bring ing its total fleet to 33—25 Mar tin 404 Pacemakers and 8 F-27 prop jet Pacemakers. Both aircraft originally be longed to TWA. The first, 442 E purchased from East Coast Fly ing Service, is currently in maintenance for standardization and will be the first Martin to have a 44 place interior. Pied mont will place the craft into service around March 10 with its original TWA number, N40402. The other aircraft was pur chased from Aerojet and is the “sister” to the present N40440. The second Martin to have a seat configuration of 44, it will be out of modification on March 25 and will be assigned the num ber N40401. A third plane was purchased from the Martin Corporation to be salvaged for parts. This air craft was used by Martin for flight tests in up-dating the Mar tin 202A to the Martin 404.
