September/October/November, 1975 gyiBomamra/? page three Long Lines Since Piedmont’s long lines were one of, if not the most successful of our modes of communication, we thought a column by the same name might be a good way of mentioning some of the small, but newsy things of interest that go on around the system. Any con tributions you might have will be more than welcome. Address them to the Editor, Piedmonitor, lNT-215. Piedmont’s team finished in 12th place in the World Airlines Golf Tournament. There were 45 teams in the tenth annual tournament, played this year at the Nueva Andalucia Golf Club in Marbella, Spain. Joel Gibson of Wilmington and Joe Moore- field of Winston also won the VFW Fokker ^Trophy for the U.S. local service airlines. The TWA team took home the first place trophies with a score of 141. Gibson and Moorefield finished 7-over-par at 151. The VFW-Fokker 614 was touring North America for the first time. In the livery of its first operator, Cimber Air, the 614 stopped in 13 cities during its 17 day tour of the eastern half of the continent. The “neighbourly” little airplane — seating capacity is for 40 to 44 passengers — was in Winston as much to be shown to the public through news media, as to be presented to Piedmont. Though very attractive, technically and in appearance, the 614 is more than a little expensive at $4.5 million. After the Fokker team and the Rolls Royce engine experts travelling with them, introduced their airplane some of Piedmont’s personnel and the newsmen were invited to take a short trip. The group went over to Danville, where all the passengers got olT. The 614 then took- off', very quietly and used less than three quarters of DAN’s 5,000-foot runway. After a series of turns the plane came whispering back to pick up its obviously impressed passengers. The Fokker visit just happened to come on the same day Piedmont retired its last FH-227 from scheduled service. That story is on page one. The 614 let its passengers off in Danville tor a brief demonstration of its quietness. The visiting 614 returned to Cimber Air's main base at Sonderborg, Denmark to begin operation on their domestic network after its first North American demonstration tour.
