Mr« Janis received a standing ovation after his perfonnance. Dr* Phofl expressed his wish that the Orchestra might return in August, if possible, Biyron Janis made his professional debut in concert at the age of nine in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's Carnegie Hall. Coming from a non-musical family, his talents were discovered by a Pittsburgh kindergarten teacher who called his pa rents* attention to the fact that the boy possessed perfect pitch and showed unusual musical interest. His first concert attracted the attention of pianist Joseph Lhevinne, who recommended that his parents take 5yron to New York to work with the weil- known teacher Adele Marcus. While in New York he won scholarships at the Co lumbia Grammar School, and took special courses in composition and harmony at the Chatham Square Music School. Vladimir Horowitz heard the performance and, though he had never accepted a p\jpil before, took the talented youth as a student for three years.
