To amplify these bell- tones, Schulmerich designed electronic gear which was pioneering, in itself. He now had an electro-mechanical carillon weighing a few hundred pounds but capable of producing the tone of bells weighing mai^ tons. Ultimately, he was to build a 671-bell carillon for Expo *675 speci fically, for the Sun Life Assurance Com pany, This incredible instrument musi cally dwarfs the world’s largest cast carillon...the 7U-bell carillon in River side Church in New York City...while weighing a mere fraction of it. Needless to say, the cost of the Schulmerich is also a mere fraction of that of the cast carillon. Selling the new bell instruments was not easy, at firstj it was too advanced a concept for many in a time of limited technological sophistication. But when the late Father Flanagan installed one in the chapel of the famous Boys* Town, thousands of visitors thrilled to the perfection of the Schulmerich instrument and the number of inquiries.. .and in stallations rose, sharply. Ibday, there are over 8OOO Schulmerich installations, all over the world. 1969 _ _ PAGE 19 THE LITTLE RE"D HEN Neer* I ecrcf t Shop | KruJJUng, SuppJjLoA C/ieioeX. ^mb/wideA.u /^e.ediepolrut 6k fkone j Among them are the Schulmerich carillons at Arlington National Cemetery, the shrine over the "U.S.S. They are installed at many educational institu tions, among them the Universities of ]%ryland, Mnnesota, and Houston, And hundreds of banks, insurance companies and other commercial have installed and dedicated Schulmerich instruments to their communities. The city of San Pablo, California, dubbing itself "The City of the Bells," has a municipal Schulmerich Carillon whose music is "piped" to remote stentors in all parts of the city. So proud are the citizens of their municipal carillon that the bell symbol appears on main street signs, even on street lighting being installed! Thanks to George Schulmerich hundreds of thousands of Americans thrill to an instrument and a kind of music which were thought, just a few decades ago, to have vanished, forever.
