It wii!* late 'I'tieHday nitfht when my family and I
drovt* into Wilson aftiT a lonK. hard trii> of nearly nine-
hundred miU‘!». We decided to drive to the college to take
a look at what was to be my home for the next nine
month!*. What 1 saw of the school that iiiifht was a few
buildinKs, cold and very unfriendly-lookinjr in the late
evenin»t darkne.ns. I could only think, "Maybe in the morn-
injj it will be better.” And it wa.-il
The next day we were conducted on a tour of the
campuH with an able Kuide. Everyone wa.n so friendly
we didn't realize they were people whom we had never
met before. When we went into one of the office.s they
called u.-; by name and even knew where we were from.
Had it not been for the uppercla.‘».'<men who were
here to help with orientation and the kindness of the fa
culty. I believe I would have jfone back home that very
day. I was afraid that after the first day the friendliness
would fade, but it hasn’t and I doubt that it ever will. It’s
hard to explain what it means to be hundreds of miles
from family and frit nds and have a iierfect stranger smile
and sav "Howdy.”

about things that puzzles the new

the upperclassmen were well-pre-

A tired, bewildered bunch of
freshmen went to he'd in their new
quarters with mixed emotions.
