Champion Gardeners, Air. and Airs. Charlie Cook Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Cook (Main Office) can take a bow as Ecusta Garden Champions of 1948. When the points were totalled in "the fourth an nual Harvest Festival, Charlie and his wife had amassed 12,750 to win the top grand sweepstakes prize—A GE Automatic Ironer—and approxi mately $100 in cash. For the second consecutive year, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Paxton (Gatehouse) came in a close second, with 11,500 points. Their prize was an Apex Vacuum Cleaner and $85 in cash. Main speaker for the climax of the Festival Friday night, Septeber 3, was the Hon. J. Mel ville Broughton, governor of North Carolina 1941-45 and Democratic nominee for the U. S. Senate in the November election. Mr. Broughton based his remarks around the insignia on the Ecusta letterhead which portrays science, industry, and agriculture working togeth er. He laid special emphasis on science as ex plored through research. "Through research in agriculture and industry, we will add new wealth to the state and increase the average earnings of our people,” he said. The speaker referred often to the resources of North Carolina in his talk and cited our state as unexcelled in its balance between agriculture and industry, adding that present and future progress depends largely on this balance. Mr. Harry H. Straus introduced Mr. Brough ton and gave the address of welcome. R. F. Ben nett was master of ceremonies and E. B. Garrett, Jr. awarded prizes to the winners, giving a brief and appropriate comment on each of them. The Ecusta band opened the program and later played a march, composed by the personnel of the recreation staff, dedicated to Mr. Harry H. Straus. Entitled "Uncle Harry”, this was the first time the piece had been played publicly. Colored movies of activities at the annual pic nic July 5 included the program. The movies were well-received by the crowd. Walter Glass took the majority of the shots and he was as sisted by R. F. Bennett. Taking third place behind the Cooks and Pax tons were Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Bowen (Job Printing) with 5,050 points which entitled them to an RCA portable radio. The other four win ners and their prizes were as follows: Mr. and Mrs. George Love (Physical Lab), GE electric blanket, with 4,900 points; Mr. and Mrs. Eugene King (Fundamental Research), RCA table model radio, with 3,400 points; Mr. and Mrs. Furman Cansler (Cleaner Crew), automatic toaster, with 3,300 points; Mr. and Mrs. John Ashworth (Champagne), an automatic coffee-maker, with 3,200 points; and Mr. and Mrs. Lester C. Wilson (Champagne), GE iron, with 2,800 points. In 10
