Senior artist colors campus Wednesday, December 12,1984/THE BLUE BANNER/5 By Alana Jones Thanks to Scott Lowerey, a senior art student and Continuing Education In structor, UNGA*s cafeteria Is a little less dreary and the gameroom in the Highsmlth University Cen ter is a lot more pleasant to look at. As part of a special art project, Lowerey painted two ourals in public plac es i^ere almost every DNCA. student congregates at one time or another. CoatiaaoDi, the fantas tic, magical mural adorn ing the back walls in the cafeteria, is a peaceful work of art that stands in stark- contrast to the coldness of the cafeteria. "I wanted something that was an alternative to the landscape outside," Lower ey said. "CnntiwMi offers alot of texture and imag ery so people won’t get bored. "The flying objects are calm, and the boxes add depth to the room," he added. Lowerey went on to say that Coatlmm was very carefully planned out. "I spent 160 hours on this piece," he said. "It evolved from alot of sketches I had done. I approached it step step. "Goatimm is nuch more intellectual than Passing Series (the gameroom mur al) ," Lowerey continued. "It evokes people’s reac tions to their environ ment, and the imagery is something that they can relate to." Passing Series is an abstract mural that de picts color and motion. "I wanted it to echo speed and movement," he said. "That’s why it gives a feeling of motion." Putting the colors to gether was spontaneous. Fassiiig Series is more of an emotional piece than CofttlnuiBi," Lowerey said. Lowerey says these mur als offer an opportunity to re-introduce nodem art to the environment so that people can relate to it. "When a person sees a painting in an art gal lery, he can't relate to it as much as he can when he sees a mural in a pub lic place," he said. Despite the murals' un questionable beauty, Low erey insists, "neither of them reflect ny individual style. They are fairly experimental." Does this talented art ist have plans to do more murals in the future? "I*d definitely like to do more," he said. Talent runs in Lowery’s family. For example, his father was head of the art department at Warren Wil son College. As for Lowerey’s plans, he says he’d like to take a couple of years off af ter graduating from UNGA to do some freelance work in Europe. "I’d eventually like to teach on the college lev el," he says. ■ COUPON n.v' FREE CAAiERA (Value $300) Drawing December 21 ^3.00 OFF Photofinishing With This Coupon SPECIAL 30”X 40” Giant Poster $ THE UNGA WQIffiN'S CSQKOS, one of the featured gCDu^ at last week's Second Sundays at Four prograa in Llpinsicy Andltoriim, entertained the andlaice with a variety of old OurlstBBS carols* Staff photo by Sylvia Hawkins '2010'review Another space odyssey COUPON 16.95 By Jon Downs Guest Reviewer One of the most-awaited films of the 1984 Christ mas season, 2010, is the sequel to Stanley Ku brick’s 2001: A ^>aoe Od yssey. Considered by many to be the biggest science fic tion classic of all time, 2001 set the pattern for future space esqjloration movies. The bulk of 2001 in volved a mission by the spaceship Discovery to explore a two-kilometer- long, black monolith orb iting around the planet Jupiter. But on the way, the Dis covery’s super-cooputer, HAL, goes paranoid and psychotic and starts to kill all of the ship’s crew members. Well, the commander of the mission, David Bowman (played bj Keir Dullea) manages to not only put HAL to sleep but get to Jupiter as well. As he investigates the monolith, a strange change (evolution?) takes place. His last message to Earth is "My God, it’s full of stars." 2010 opens with that same message and a case report of the mission. As the title indicates, it is nine years later. Roy Scheider, of Blue Thunder fame, plays the ousted chairman of the Discovery mission who feels a responsibility for its failures. Due to a not-too-compli- cated series of circum stances , it is decided that three Americans, in cluding Scheider, will go on board a Russian ship to find out why the Discovery mission failed. The two Americans accom panying Scheider are the man who designed the Dis covery and the one who de signed the mentall3r"ill HAL.^ Peter Ifyams, the direc tor of 2010, was in a dif ficult position directing a sequel to a science fic tion classic such as 2001, which was directed by Stanley Kubrick, consid ered many to be a gen ius . So Ifyams chose to direct 2010 his way rather than try to emulate Kubrick. The result is a movie with less depth and intellec tual stimulation but with nuch broader, general peal. In all fairness, the film should be judged on three criteria: as a mov ie, as a sequel to 2001, and as science fiction. As a movie, it kept ny interest and I enjoyed it. The special effects were tight and Hyams got good performances out of his actors. As a sequel, it loses the feel that Kubrick gave 2001, so it will disap point those who are look ing for that; but it does answer a few questions and continues the story. And as science fiction, the special effects and photography give it an excellent feel, wliile the plot is close enough to today’s situations so that the audience can relate to the problems. All in all, 2010 is good as a movie; as a sequel it does the job; and as sci ence fiction it is excel lent. Boxes 81 Bows/Unltd. “Wc wrap everything....
