JONES, prominent building contractor and a lead er among Methodists in the South, was the principal speak er at the annual Brevard chamber of commerce banquet Thursday night in the Brevard college cafeteria. Sunday Sings Are Brevard Tradition About fifty boys, girls and mem bers of the faculty assembled in the parlor of West hall at 9 p. m. on February 11, for what is hoped will become a traditional event on the Brevard college campus — a Sunday night sing. Reid Gilbert, Brevard college sophomore, who was in charge of the program, announced that plans for future programs include spe cial solos, duets, and quartets. He urged anyone wishing to take part in these special features to make their wishes known. Students Organize Reader’s Club; Kennedy, Advisor; Gilbert, Head The Readers’ club of Brevard college held its first formal meet ing on the afternoon of February 20 and elected officers to serve through the current academic year. Reid Gilbert was elected president; Tom Roberts, vice-pres- ident, and Ellen Faulkner, secre- tary-treasurer. The central purpose of this group, as explained by Tom Rob erts, ex officio program chairman, is to afford its members training and practice in the art of reading aJoud. Active in initiating the organiza tion were ministerial students and others whose professions will re group will work with selected quire skill in public reading. The prose, drama, and poetry—secular and sacred. Later in the year the Readers hope to accept engage ments for platform reading; and they may offer a recital some time in the spring. Group Will Honor Robert Frost In Broadcast The initial project of the club will be a program given on the Brevard College Hour over station WPNF on Sunday, March 4. Ded icated to Robert Frost, who will be guest lecturer at the college on the evening of March 10. The program will present members of tlie club reading favorite selec tions from Mr. Frost’s work. Hope To Aid In Library Activities The Readers have as a subsidiary aim, co-operation in all campus projects designed to make the James Addison Jones library, its collection, and, in general, the reading of good books, more vital forces in the life of the Brevard college students. All interested students are eli gible for membership the group has announced. Initial members are the following; Charles Yarbrough, Helen Col- tri.ne, Paul Nicholson, Dorothy Gay Rockwood, Tom Roberts, Reid Gilbert, Odell Parker, Caroline Collins, Fletcher Martin, Dorothy Dillinger, Tom Neal, Joyce Brand, Bobby Hoyle, Carolyn Hamilton, Ellen Faulkner, Alice Leggett, Jane Wilson, and Hope Leonard. He said: “When a student now leaves Brevard college to enter another college or university for advanced academic work, that student goes well prepared, well grounded and v/lth a certificate that is gladly, even eagerly, accepted. President Ehlhardc and his fine faculty are making Brevard a real college.” Banquet Well Attended General preparation for this as sembly of regional businessmen, their wives, Brevard college facul ty, and friends of the college was carried out under the supervision of John Ford, chairman of the en tertainment and conventions com mittee of the local chamber. Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Gaither su pervised the staff of the college cafeteria in serving the more than 150 people who attended. The room was decorated in a manner appro priate to George Washington’s birthday. “Everything For The Family” PLUMMER’S MAIN ST. Eight Are Added To Language Fraternity Mary Alice HoUifield, president of Sigma Pi Alpha, honorary fra ternity at Brevard college, has an nounced that the organization wiU initiate eight new members in a formal ceremony in the near fu ture. Students maintaining a “B” av erage and who are making at least a “B” on the foreign language course they are taking have been invited to become members of the organization. The new members for this year are: Lawson Bingham, Carol Car ter, Mary Louise Dean, Russel Gen try, Natalie Jones, Alice Leggett, Tom Neal, and Bernie Welch. The initiates will be honored at a banquet in the cafeteria after the service. Take a Trip Over To Visit “Fabia” Students who never get sick enough to visit the infirmary should make at least one trip—to see FABIOLA. This painting, a reproduction of the Henner original, hangs above the desk of Miss Vera Ault, college nurse. The subject, Fabiola, was a Ro man woman who about 390 A. D. .set up the first Christian free pub lic hospital. She financed it her self and worked in it as a nurse. Fabiola gathered the poverty- stricken sick from the streets and nursed them back to health. The French artist, Henner, was impressed by the story of this Ro man woman and through his paint ing has immortalized her services to suffering humanity. The orig inal now hangs in the Louvre Mu seum in Paris. Warren Lee Terry to President “Camille” Ehlhardt: “It isn’t the coughin’ that takes a man off.
