PAGE FOUR THE CLARION November 17 igg^- TORNADO WARNING! BY MIKE BUMGARDNER Congratulations goes out to Coach Talley and Coach Tauscher as they both wrapped up their sea sons with the best records in the school’s history. Coach Talley’s trackmen established themselves as a major power in sweeping to a 10-0 record and finish ing second in the nation. Coach Tauscher’s soccer team finished with a 6-3-2 record, the school’s best since several years ago when Brevard soccer had a 2-4-4 record . . . Coach Tauscher prides in the fact that he’s nev er worn shin - guards in a soccer game. He relayed this to David Mullis one day just before a game when Dave asked him about them. “I’ve never been kick ed, so I don’t wear them,” said Coach T. MuHis, therefore, with confidence marched on the field min us the shin-guards and promptly was greeted with a polite boot right ... in the shins .... I feel I must repay Coach Martin for his intro duction during the Pep Rally Tuesday. Ask any of the sophomores about the time last year when during our especially long road game, everyone rid ing in Coach Martin’s car was asleep. With every thing quiet and dark. Coach Martin drowsed off just enough for the car to swerve rather badly. He awoke immediately and was greeted by the sight of seven pairs of round, bright eyeballs blinking on-and-off, on-and-off. We took turns posting guard the remain der of the way back to school. The upcoming game with Young - Harris should be a thriller. Last year’s victory over Y.H.G. was only Brevard’s third in the two team’s personal rec ords. This year, Young Harris has already played two games. They have defeated Gainesville, and the re sult of the other game is not known yet. Mr. Joe Bowles informed us that Brevard Basketball would be broadcast over WPNF this year. This would in clude a large number of road games and some home games. I think the publicity this year for Bre vard has been outstanding, and much thanks should be given to Mr. Bowles. The Seminar: A Better Method? (Continued from Page Two) search for knowledge, not bound by one-hour class room performances. Education is the key to overcoming ignorance, so it follows that the more effective the educational system, the more intelligent man may become. Through his more highly developed intelligence, man is more able to deal with the barbarisms of his world; he becomes truly civilized. Bob Towe JONES News Stand 30 W. Main St. OWENBY BROS. The old record held by John Tinsley was 172’ 2Vt”. Thompson’s added Vi inch to the mark on his third throw and final throw. Larry earned eight letters and set several school records in track and football at Conestoga High in Berwyn. Drew “Moose” Baron gained a place for Brevard in the shot put event with a distance of 49’ 11”. Moose will be a strong contender for the national championship in the spring. Also representing Brevard in the meet were Roger Jones, Wayne Morton, Ed Holder, and Bub Hanson. Witnessing snow in the Great Smoky Mountains and encountering cold tempera tures in Knoxville, Coach Tal ley’s thinclads were somewhat hampered as were all the ath letes. Tornado Speed Is Big Factor Hot - handed Arnold Nich- Olson pumped in 24 points from all over the floor Tues day night to lead the Brevard College Tornadoes to an on ening season 64-56 win over the Gainesville, Ga. Junior College Lakers at Boshamer gym. Nicholson divided his scorine evenly, getting 14 points in tht first half and adding 10 in the final half to be high scorer for the evening. The Tornadoes overcame a case of opening game jitters that had them making sev eral bad passes and losing ball control during the first half. They led by only 31-28 at halftime. Coach “Chick” Martin’s char ges seemed to settle down after momentarily losing the lead at 37-36 early in the last half to- quickly regain the advantage and keep it throughout the re mainder of the contest. Ronnie Vance was the only other Tornado in double fig ures. He had 14 points. Brevard plays their second game of the season on the road at Young Harris, Ga. this Saturday night. The next home game will be played here next Monday night, Nov. 20, against Montreat • Ander son.
