(Photo by Steve Rabey) by Laurie Krug The 1980 Census will be taken on April 1 and will include college campuses. The primary purpose of the census is to provide population counts for reap portioning seats in the House of Representatives, but also, student answers can help college communities in many different areas. Some federal programs that depend on information from the Census are: employment and 'raining, health services, mental lealth centers, community olleges, highway safety, sum- .ner youth recreation, unem ployment insurance, alcohol and drug abuse, student loans, land and water conservation, summer programs for disadvantaged youth and public library con struction and services. By law, the information attained in the 1980 Census cannot be used for taxation, investigation, or regulation or in any military or jury service. Nor can it be used for the compulsion of school attendance or the regulation of immigration. It is the public’s duty under the law to complete the Census correctly. It is yet not known at Brevard College how it will be conducted but look for upcoming announcements. Remember, Census information collected from individuals is safeguarded by strict confidentiality laws. CENSl» c atB hyFou fTw World The by Jana L. Miller If you have not noticed the sculpture in front of art building by now, then you must be walking by bhndfolded. The unusual work was completed by Ann Black man, a sophomore at Brevard College, >vho is involved in the intermediate sculpture class under the supervision of professor Tim Murray. Miss Blackman refers to her sculpture as an “illusionary piece.” It is a two dimensional illlusionary art piece in that from a distance it can easily be misinterpreted as a teepee. But upon closer observation of the sculpture, you realize that it is not three dimensional. Ann’s assignment for this semester dealt with mood. Another request of Professor Murray’s, was to carry a two by four around with them for a week. There were nine people involved in this assignment, including Mr. Murray. The purpose of this assignment was to become aware of space and what effect the two by four had on this space. They also carried them around to find how it related to them in person. The students received a lot of unusual remarks about their assignment, but Mr. Murphy summed up their feelings in one sentence, “Art does deal with the social awareness.” After their personal experiences of babysitting a two by four for a week, they then proceeded to make an individual sculpture with it. Once this was completed, they began the task of creating their own sculpture with as many two by fours as necessary. This is when Black man created her piece. Mr. Murphy states that this assignment is, “One of the most successful projects carried out and all the students seemed to have gained a great deal from it.” What Mr. Murray means by “gained” is that anytime an artist creates or does some form of art involving “sophisticated philosophical ideas as to how you’re to balance things,” you have gained experience. The more experience gained, the more awareness of yourself and others you obtain. You also gain experience of understanding and more of what is visual. According to Mr. Murphy, “We live in a visual world” Professor Murray is happy with the results of his students individual sculpture projects and these sculptures are presently on exhibit. Besides the sculpture on display outside, there are several more on exhibit inside the art building. The show ends March 14. ‘10’ Rates 5 by Michael Ledbetter In looking up at a marquee where the movie “10” is playing, one might get the impression that the film includes two full hours of seductive scenes with America’s newest sex star. Bo Derek. The reason for this misconception is the fact that Ms. Derek is receiving star billing'across the country for a relatively minor role. It is obvious that Derek is a beautiful young woman and it also may be true that her recent nude photo spread in Playboy helped pack theaters with hot- blooded American males. Still, the fact remains, Dudley Moore and Julie Andrews are the film's stars. The story revolves around Moore, who plays a middle aged man that is not exactly content with being middle aged. In fact, he decides that the first 40 years of his life haven't been fulfilling so he leaves everything, in cluding his lady friend (Julie Andrews), and heads off for romantic Mexico on a pilgrimage. While in Mexico, Moore notices Derek and develops a childhood crush for the beautiful creature. Well as one might expect, everything falls into place and Moore can be with this so called Goddess, only to find that aside from being somewhat unstable, she also likes to make love to classical music. To say the least he was disap pointed, but he had fulfilled his dream. Although the above was a somewhat simple summary, so was the plot to the movie. Had it not been for the drawing power of Bo Derek, the movie would probably have gone down as being a class B, entertaining flick. Ms. Derek is beautiful, it’s just too bad she was only on the screen for about half an hour. I know of too many people, mostly males, who came out of the theater with a dumbfounded look on their face. If we forget for one minute who is in the movie and just go see it, we would all probably enjoy it a little more. Frankly, on a scale of 1 to 10, I personally would give "10” a 5. ■■■ ’-rr I 'iiE- ' The beaches will soon be invaded by BC students once spring break begins. (Photo by Steve Rabey)
