In Intramurals By Tommy Pennell After three weeks of play, Upper Beam and Upper Taylor were the only two teams remaining undefeated. The most important game so far was between Upper Taylor and Lower Green, with Upper Taylor squeezing by 63-62. The leading scorer for Taylor was David Dewey with 17 points. Bryan Lowery followed closely with 16 while Greg Stephenson added 12. Lower Green was led by Larry Duckworth with 17. Teammates Roger Payne and Jerry Nichiro were close behind with 14 and 13 respectively. In other games, Lower Beam won its first game by defeating Ross Hall 84-76. Anthony Steele led the winners, pumping in 22 points. Tom Wayne led Ross Hall with 39 points while teammate Gary Copeland added 25. Upper Beam soundly defeated the Day Students 67-48 when Dennis Marshall played a strong inside game for the Bucs and put in 15 points. The Day Students were led by Jim Rogers with 14. Upper Green picked up its first win of the season by breaking open a close game in the second half again Lower Taylor. The main man for Green in the game was Branson Lowe with 23 points while Carter Jasicob had 11. The leader for Lower Taylor was Johnny Madden with 10 points and consistent all around play. Jim Rogers led the way for the Day Students against Lower Beam by a score of 53-52. The win was earned by a great come from behind effort. Ross Hall played its usual great second half to no avail against Upper Beam. The Bucs won by a score of 54-49. Their record falls to 5-12. Mike King led the scoring with 16 points, followed closely the Trent Westmoreland’s 14, Mel Melton’s 12, and Craig Wilson’s 10. The team suffered another loss on February 5 to An derson Junior College by a final of 102-87. “Wolf” King led all scorers with 28 points. Melton followed with 18 while Westmoreland and Walter Faye each had 13. Their second victory since the Christmas break was a win at Mon treat-Anderson on February 2, by a score of 44- 43. Faye, Melton and West moreland continued to pave the way for Brevard, for each had }eight points in the slow paced game. Brevard was handed another setback on January 31- when North Greenville outscored the Tornados by a score of 86-68. Westmoreland led the Tornados with 13 points. After leading the Spar tanburg Methodist Pioneers by 13 with 15 minutes left in the game, the Tornados fell to a 79-75 defeat. Westmoreland led the Tornados again with 25 points and 13 rebounds. He was helped by Melton with 18 points while Wilson added 11. The men will host Isothermal Community College on Thursday before closing out the regular season with Columbia Junior College Saturday night in Boshamer Gymnasium. Both games will begin at 7:30. (Photo by Steve Rabey) Women Tornados Continue To Win With A Victory Over Furman by Yvonne Roop The Lady Tornados continued their winning streak as they hosted the Warren Wilson Owls on Jan. 21, 1981. The Tornados carried the lead at half time with a score of 32-20 and finished the game with a victory of 77-41. Freda Stovall lead the Lady Tornados with 19 points. Sandra James added 18 points and Deborah Russell (13) and Jill Haynie (11) followed closely in scoring. Coach Devlin com mented that the game was a well- rounded one. She also stated that Gwen Kanipe had 7 assists and was a great asset to the scoring percentage, being that it was her first game playing since she sprained her ankle. On Feb. 4, 1981 the Lady Tor nados hosted Furman. The score was tied at half time, but when the Lady Tornados returned for the second half, they played a well fought game and carried the victory with a score of 70-62. Stovall lead the ladies with her highest scoring game of 32 points. Haynie was close behind scoring 24 points. Coach Devlin com mented that the girls hustled good against the varsity team of Furman and during the second half they made 50% of their shots. Gwen Kanipe had 10 assists in the game which helped land the Lady Tornados the win. On Feb. 5th the Lady Tornados traveled to Anderson College. The Trojans won the game with a score of 84-73, but they did not win it without a fight by the Tornados. It was a good competitive game with the Tornados pulling within 4 points with only 1; 38 left in the game. The Tornados scored 8 straight points but were unable to pull closer and win the game. Once again Stovall lead the team with 25 and Haynie with 23 points. The Tornados’ 36 turnovers contributed to their loss. The Lady Tornados traveled to Converse College on Feb. 9 for yet another win. It was a slow first half with Converse leading at half time by 2 points. The second half proved much more exciting for the Tornados as they pressed for a win of 62-49 over Converse. During the second half, Stovall scored 17 of her final 21 points. Haynie had 15 points and Russell added 8. Coach Devlin commented that “Although we won the game, our playing was not as well as in previous games.” The Lady Tornados have only three more games before the Division and Regional Tour naments. Coach Devlin feels that her team’s chances for the Divisional Tournament are good. She and the girls know that it will be tough, however. They have the confidence to agree that they could possibly be one of the top two teams to win. Coach Devlin added that “The girls must play exceptionally well if they want to win the tournament.” As of this writing, the Lady Tornados have a record of 11-4.
