The se cond mistake made in the presentation of the memo was that administrators bypass ed the SGA. There was no initial consulta tion as to how students felt about the pro posal. Dean Langley said, “It was not an intentional oversight. Students have the right to be concerned for not being con sulted.” And at the same time that the housing controversy surfaced the “Date With the Dean Dinner” came along. Many students thought it was too convenient when they first heard about it. However, according to Langley, the dinner was “planned in ad vance.” It was all just a matter of bad tim ing. Langley stressed that the administra tion wasn’t trying to snowball the students in attempts to smooth things over concern ing the housing. Protesting the new housing plans, students have drawn up a petition that has been circulated through the student body. As of this writing, about 200 signatures have been collected. The new SGA Presi- ' dent Shane Milling said that SGA has also drawn up a petition listing complaints from the students toward the new housing edict. The administrators say the petitions are having the desired effect. President Greer said, “I like to see students voice their strong opinions.” Dean Scarborough was also very impressed that the students and SGA had banded together on the petitions. He said, “I’m proud of SGA for standing up about housing. The petition is a good thing.” Overall, the administrators feel that f)etitions are a positive way for mature, college students to express their opinions and strive to change the things they don’t agree with. As Dean Langley said, “A petition is an opportunity for students to encourage SGA into some kind of action.” For the most part, however. Dr. Greer thinks that such a proposal won’t work on a campus the size of BC, but that perhaps sometime in the future, the housing pro posal might be integrated into the campus. As Dean Scarborough said, “We just thought we’d try it.” For now though, students for fall of 1987 will, as Dr. Greer says, “live where they want to live.”
