Campus Life 3 Meet the Instructor: Jennifer Frick by Gavin McCormack As many of you upperclassmen and women have noticed, there are some new faculty here at Brevard College, and one of those new faculty members is Dr. Jennifer Frick. Dr. Frick came to us from Clemson University where she was a research scientist studying egg-cell polarity. Not only did Dr. Frick teach at Clemson, but she also received her education there. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and then went on to receive a Ph.D. in Zoology. After her formal college training Dr. Frick went on to a Post-Doctoral fellowship with the Smithsonian Institution at a marine station in Fort Pierce Florida, which is about one hour north of Miami. All the while Dr. Frick was working for Clemson University, she lived right here in the western North Carolina area. That’s right. Dr. Frick lives right up the road from Brevard in a town called Balsam Grove, which is located up highway 215. However, Dr Frick’s house is not the place that most people would call an average home. For up to her house. Instead she where the road ends to hel would be surprising about no electricity. That means no ceiling fans, and no tele- there are none of the things ine living without. And seeing as how she was already living in the area, there was no reason not to take the job. After all it would save her from having to drive all the way to Clemson everyday. Dr. Frick explained to me that she is going to be teaching some never-before-offered classes next year. For example, she will be offering an aquatic ecosystems class as well as a human ecology course, which will be a part of the newly developed ecology major. Dr. Frick expressed excitement about the upcoming semesters and she said that she feels that the school is “going in the right direction and she also said that “as long as everything goes reasonably well then she has no plans for leaving Brevard College. Now that you know a little bit about Dr. Frick “the new lady,” try to make an effort to get into some of her classes because they are guaranteed to be an experience. If you don’t take any of her classes next semester, don’t worry; hopefully, she will be sticking around for a long time. Adopt-A-Dorm Program by Katherine Sullivan and Mandi Milligan Brevard College has started a pro gram designed to increase interac tion between the students and the teachers. Rick Boyer Visits Brevard College by Megan Clark Rick Boyer, who has entertained thousands with his novellas, came to Brevard College hoping to entertain some young writers from our school and to teach them the importance of being open-minded in terms of their own works and writings. In his two hour reading session here at Brevard College, he read from two of his most famous novellas. One reading was done from “ Bell Rock Light”, and the other was done out of the novella Oops, Wrong Week”. Both were very entertaining and will give our writers here at Brevard College a chance to become aware of the many different types and styles of writing. Rick Boyer studied writing at the University of Iowa during his graduate years. There, he combined his own style of writing with something known as a “Novella”. From that he has produced many award -wiiming novellas. Brevard College is fortunate to have had such a renowned writer come and speak with us. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle by Mandi Milligan The first annual Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Swap Meet put on by the new Brevard College Environmental Awareness Organization got off to a great start. The event took place on Monday the 16th and many people con tributed to the event. Approximately 50 items of clothing, ten pairs of shoes, and some other items were donated. The items that Honduras needs will be sent there and the rest will be given to those others in need. The Environmen tal Awareness Organization is a great way for many people who care aboutthe environment to come together and find possible solutions to many environ mental problems right here on campus. If you would like to become involved E-Mail Mandi Milligan, Aimee SaLzer, or Chris Lowe.
