Page 2 News The Clarion September 29, 2006 SGA Report SGA discusses mold issues on campus by Jamie Michaels Opinon Editor This week’s Joint Session meet ing saw a first for the SGA. As the first order of new business, the House and Senate passed a Joint Resolution expressing concern over the recent mold issues in the North and South Villages and in Jones Hall. The resolution re quests a speedy and effective re sponse to the health risk. Later in the meeting, Jordon Huppert (President, Senior Class) brought forth a resolution in which the SGA officially thanks Jeanne Landreth for her service to Brevard College. Landreth has served the college as Custodial Manager since 2001. Next week will be her last with the college. Until Wednesday night, the Brevard College SGA had never issued a joint resolution. It was announced that the pre vious estimated cost of $14,000 to create a patio dining space along side Meyers Dining Hall has been reduced to approximately $8,000. SGA is looking into splitting the cost of the patio with the Admin istration. Plans are being discussed with architect Mike Micuda and Aramark’s John Crowe. The earli est estimated time for completion of the project is Spring 2007. An executive bylaw regarding succession of office was given to the Senate for review. The bylaw will be discussed and voted on at the next Senate meeting on Oct. IP". Nominations were continued for open SGA seats. Current nominees are: Executive Board Secretary: Leigh Ann Beatty Senior Class Secretary: Jess Rischer Sophomore Class President: BJ Wanlund, Elyse Veeneman, Michael Hicks, and Ryan Burleson. Freshman Class President: Nicole Anderson and Ryan Fiffick Freshman Class Vice President: Kayley Duval and Sean Donahey Freshman Classe Secretary: Kayla Ballard and Mandi Pearson Nominations may only be made at an SGA meeting, and will re main open for one more week. Elec tions will be held the week of Oct. 9th Also, The Paramount’s Carowinds trip scheduled for this Saturday, Oct.l has been post poned, as the facility is being rented out for a private event. It will be rescheduled, hopefully for Oct. 2P‘— in time for “Scarowinds” Halloween celebra tion. Club leaders are reminded that CAB needs help with homecom ing, and that clubs are required to help with one CAB event per se mester. You can register to vote in per son—or obtain a mail-in form— at the local DMV office, the county elections office, or the pub lic library. Keep in mind, though, you have to register at least 25 days before elections, or you won’t be able to vote. If you’re already registered to vote, but are from a different state or county, you can also obtain an absentee ballot. A voter may make a written request for an absentee ballot beginning fifty days prior to, but no later, than the Tuesday preceding Election Day. The writ ten request must be signed by the voter and sent to the county elec tions office. Once the elections office has received the request, an application and ballot will be mailed to the voter’s home. If you are using an absentee bal lot, make sure you have it in no later than 5:00 pm on the day prior to elections. Also, check to see if your state does online voting. You can’t vote online in North Carolina, but ev ery state is different, so it might not be a bad idea to verify. If you’re not sure of the exact web address, run a Google search of your state’s voter registration. Not sure who to vote for? Make sure you get a good idea of what each candidate stands for before voting day. Campaign websites are generally biased, and always keep in mind that most commercials are as well. Even various forms of news media are sometimes biased, so make sure you read carefully before choosing a definite candi date. As long as you keep the follow ing dates in mind, you should be just fine: October 13'*': final day to register to vote October 3P‘: Last day to request an absentee vote November 6'*': Mailed absentee ballots must be received in BOE office by 5:00 p.m. Dead line to request absentee ballots for sickness/disability is 5:00 p.m. November 7**': Election Day If you have any further ques tions, you can contact the Transylvania County Election Office at 828-884-3114.
