Page 2 News The Clarion \ March 16, 2007 Salzburg participants bring global citizenship to Brevard by Solange Foucqueteau Contributor Over Christmas break four BC students and one faculty member had the opportunity to attend a weeklong seminar in Salzburg, Austria titled “Global Citizen- ship-America and the World.” These students were Karen George, Josh Carter, Stephen Schonewolf and Solange Foucqueteau, along with faculty member Dr Lisa Jordan. The pro gram was hosted by the Salzburg Institute and funded by the Ap palachian College Association. Colleges like Lindsay Wilson, Carson-Newman, King College and The University of San Fran cisco were also present. This program was a great op portunity for the five of us to get some insight on current global is sues such as the Darfur situation, the oil crisis, the War on Terror, and many other important topics. In exchange for the opportunity to travel to Austria we have been asked to share what we learned at the seminar with the campus. Af ter several discussions on how we could share our experiences we came to a consensus to have a weekly column in the newspaper Security Report March 5. 3 female students staying in the Wesley House over spring break, called security in report of two young white men banging on the door of the Wesley house. The men fled before security arrived but they were later identi fied by police and issued letters of no trespass from campus security. If the men are identified on campus in the future, they could be arrested. highlighting different issues, cul tures, and ideas from around the world. Along with the column we have asked John Crow (director of Food Services at Brevard Col lege) if we could play music from different countries in the cafete ria, to which he most generously agreed. Also, I am hosting an event on March 2P‘ at 8:30 pm in the Beam Dorm Lounge. In sponsorship with the non-profit organization Americans for In formed Democracy there will be a viewing of the documentary “Outlawed.” This is a very pow erful and controversial film about two soldiers imprisoned and tortured by American troops. With this column and the viewing we hope to evoke a sense of citizenship on our campus. In our efforts, the five of us hope that we can be an informa tive source to issues around the world that may not be headlin ing on the front cover of the Transylvania Times or on the local news. We hope that you enjoy the column and other ac tivities and begin your own ef forts to become a “global citi zen.” This Week in SGA Election candidates are announced by Lauren Fortner Staff Writer SGA elections for officers will be held Monday and Tuesday around lunch time in the lobby of the Dining Hall.
