March 16, 2007 \ The Clarion NEWS Page 3 Professor Jo Pumphrey Weekend Forecast Saturday hi 52/ lo 28 Sunday hi 55/ lo 36 Brevard College faculty members recently promoted Photo from brevard.edu/art Student Feature by David Ulloa Staff Writer Fine arts professor Jo Pumphrey was promoted the po sition of full professor recently for excellent efforts in teaching, ser vices, and scholarship work. Pumphrey has been devoting her time and effort for sixteen years at Brevard College, enriching the Fine arts department and inspiring the young artistic student body. Work ing as the position of associate professor for the past six years, she applied last fall and was evalu ated for the position of full pro fessor by the Dean and the Board of Trustees. Achieving this posi tion takes a great amount of work and dedication of three specific areas of her teaching career She was evaluated from her vocation in teaching, voluntary work for the college, and personal exhibitions of art work. The full professor position includes the final promo tion as a teacher, an increased sal ary, and overall recognition of out standing teaching. Being granted a full professor brings upon much value and honor to teachers who strive to excel to further their placement in the col lege community. “It is an honor especially when you’re being evaluated by a council of respected peers and it’s very gratifying to have the support of the Board of Trustees,” states Pumphrey on her feelings about the promotion. Professors Jan Kafsky and Carrol Brooks were also promoted to associate professor status. My Spring Break: John "Tex" Billingsley Friday hi 57/ lo 34 by John Billingsley Photographer Over spring break I took a trip to Nassau, Bahamas. Nassau is the capital of the Bahamas. I went down there for part of spring break to celebrate my cousin Elizabeths marriage. On Thursday my dad and I got up around 6:30 in the morning and set out to the marina to get on a boat to go deep-sea fishing. I have never been deep sea fishing before and I was very excited and enthusiastic about the day trip. I looked up to the sky and said “Oh no, I hope my happy day is not ruined by a few thunder storms. Hopefully they 11 blow over” Finally the boat got there around 7:20 and it wasnt just us, there were a few other people around. There were around 6 dif ferent parties besides us on the boat. All the people were very nice. They were all from state side. Some were from Florida, Michigan, Texas and upstate NY area. All of the other men and one woman had been deep sea fishing before and told me how fascinat ing it was when youre fishing pole bent downwards and you almost got pulled out of your seat. Its an experience like you have nowhere else, and I said that I could not wait. The captain of the boat took us out past the barrier islands, past the reef and into the ocean. He told us that where we were it was over 10,000 feet deep. I thought to myself, thats pretty deep. You could drop a couple cars down here and stack them on top of each other and you probably still couldnt touch the bottom. I was the first one on the boat to catch a fish, it was a barracuda. A barra cuda is long and thick and they have sharp razor teeth like sharks. They look like a snake swimming in the water Barracudas can get up to over 100 pounds. Very big. After I caught my barracuda it seemed we hit a breeding area and everyone in the boat were catch ing fish all at the same time so the deck hand and the captain were running back and forth making sure no one got pulled off the boat or out of their seat. Also I caught a mahi-mahi, and that is a type of porpoise fish. My dad caught the largest mahi-mahi fish out of ev eryone on the boat. I had a lot of fun with my dad on this deep sea fishing adventure. in Bahamas
