Page 12 Arts & Life The Clarion \ October 12, 2007 Concert Review: Allen Toussaint TV Review: Pushing Daisies a hit by Zack Harding Arts & Life Editor With hits like Desperate Housewives, Dancing with the Stars, Grey’s Anatomy and Ugly Betty, someone at ABC is doing a great job of selecting hit shows. And they’ve just added another one to the roster Pushing Daisies is ABC’s new hour-length show that has audiences hooked. The show premiered last week and garnered an extremely successful share of the viewers market. Perhaps, it really deserves this great reception. This plot revolves Ned, a pie- maker/murder-investigator who has the ability to bring the dead back to life with a touch. If this person stays re-animated for a minute, another person in the vicinity will die immediately. Luckily, Ned has the ability to re-kill the dead person with a second touch that is final. This may sound quite gruesome, but the show takes this absurd theme and uses it in the cleverest of ways: full of quirky charm and atmosphere. The characters are quick and witty, and there are no duds. The camerawork and set design is easily up to feature- length quality, using a wide variety of techniques and visuals that would normally be associated with big-budget films. Furthermore, the writing reminds one of the eccentric, yet charming atmosphere of a Tim Burton movie. Pushing Daisies has a whole lot of potential. It will be interesting to see where it goes. Mr Toussaint is a pianist, singer/songwriter that has written a collection of songs for artists such as the Yardbirds, the Rolling Stones, Herb Alpert and Lee Dorsey. For us, he played classics such as “Mother-in-law,” “Fortuneteller,” and “Workin’ in the Coalmine,” which was made most famous by the Judds. Mr Touissant said, “I got to go to Nashville. And I was the only one there without a cowboy hat on my head.” Saturday night was sponsored by the friends and family of Merle Foeckler from New Orleans, in honor of hei 90* birthday. Mr Touissant surprised Merle by singing “Happy Birthday” to her accompanied by his tenoi saxophonist. Breeze. She was one special lady in the crowd! However, there was anothei special guest in the audience Saturday night- one of Brevard’s own. Nelson Doughtery. Mr. Touissant invited Nelson onto the stage with him and his quartet, to play a little jazz guitar. Nelson blew the crowd away! He had the opportunity of a lifetime to be able to jam with Mr. Allen Touissant, while being at the college of his attendance! Full of surprises, Mr. Touissant and his New Orleans quartet put on a fine show.
