The Clarion | November 21, 2008 Sports — Men's hoops returns experienced squad by Johnny 'Stats" Lange Sports Editor At a college filled with young teams, the men’s basketball squad is an exception to the rule, featuring three seniors and eight juniors on the roster Overall, the Tornados return 11 out of 12 players from last year’s team that finished 4-24 overall as they make their debut as members of the South Atlantic Conference. Providing the senior leadership are a trio of experienced players who played in every game last season. Joseph Chilton (Brasstown, N.C.) was third on the team last year averaging 8.9 points per game and also contributed on the glass with 5.3 rebounds per game. Sean Ferretti (Amherst, N.Y.), averaged 3.6 points per game last year while Radosav “Backo” Babic (Podgorica, Montenegro) chipped in with 2.5 points per game. Leading the junior class is Preseason All SAC Second Team selection Jonathon Whitson (Clyde, NC) who led the team last year in scoring averaging 18 points per game and rebounding with 7.9 per contest. Another returning starter, Andrew Freeman (Asheville, NC) averaged 9.1 points per game last year while shooting 85.7% from the free throw line. 6-10 Sam Carlisle, a redshirt junior who had to sit out last year after transferring from Wingate University, looks to use his large frame to contribute to victories this winter Also looking to contribute is Shane Galloway, who coming off the bench last year averaged 7.9 points per game. Other returning juniors on the team include Nathan Whitmire (Rossman, NC), Chase Lance (Brevard, NC), Darin Dellinger (Stanley, NC), and Cody Siniard (Brevard, N.C.). New to the team this season are freshmen Terrence Johnson (Owensboro, Ky), Richard Bush (North Augusta, Ga) and Michael Gist (North Augusta, S.C). The Tornados opened up their regular season on Tuesday night against Warren Wilson College. Only holding a 7 point lead at halftime, the Tornados were able to outscore the Owls 47-26 in the second half to win the game 70-42. Whitson led the team in scoring on the night, scoring 29 points and grabbing a team high 13 rebounds. Carlisle put in 10 points, and Chilton had eight points and Photo by M. Quartet of BC athletes named to All-SAC teams by M.A. Dozier Staff Writer The South Atlantic Conference selected four Brevard College athletes for the 2008 All-SAC Teams for the fall sports. Senior AlyciaAndrade from Somerset, Mass. represented the Cross Country team, being selected as 1 st Team All SAC. She finished 3rd in the SAC championship meet and 10th in the regional meet. In volleyball was junior Brooke Seaman, from Spring Hill, FL, who led the conference in hitting percentage and blocks per game. She was named to the 2008 All-Conference second team. The South Atlantic Conference selected two football players to represent Brevard College. Junior linebackers Stanley Jones, from Spartanburg, S.C., and Brandon Rawls, from Perry, Ga. were both selected to the 2008 All- SAC Defensive Second Team.
