Page 6 Sports The Clarion | Jan. 25.2013 Lady Tornados basketball fall to Wingate and By Matt Johnson StaffVVritei^^__ Fresh off a fantastic win over Lincoln Memorial, the women’s basketball team opened up their week of play this past Saturday on the road against Wingate. The ladies fell short to both opponents, but stayed close and kept their heads up the whole time! It took the Lady Tornados the first half of play to get their legs under them, and they went into the half trailing by a score of 31-20. However, once they found their stride, the Lady Tornados put on quite a show in the second half When the team needed to come out hot in the second half, the Lady Tornados responded and went on a 22-9 mn. With less than a minute to go, we trailed by only 2 points. Free throws were the deciding factor down the stretch. Wingate went to the line in a one-and- one situation and missed the first free throw, giving the Lady Tornados an opportunity. The rebound was grabbed by Wingate, and the Tornados were smartly fouled again, giving Wingate a second chance from the free throw line. Wingate was able to capitalize on their free throws and push the lead to 4, where it remained until the end. The Lady Tornados went on to drop a close one in a great effort by a final score of 63-59. Next up forthe Lady Tornados was Newberry College at home this past Wednesday. This was a toughly fought game, and Brevard made their presence felt on the defensive side of the ball as they forced Newberry into 20 turnovers on the night. The Lady Tornados went into the half down by a score of 35-28. The women’s team fought hard in the second half, but Newberry’s size down low proved to be too much to overcome in the end of this game. Freshman Tuccoa Brackett led Brevard with 23 points, but the Lady Tornados went on to fall by a final score of 65-55. Come out and support our Lady Tornados in their next home game at 2 p.m. this Saturday, Jan 26 and again at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan 30! Director of Lacrosse position fiiied By Ashlee Greene staff Writer Since the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) introduced lacrosse as a conference sport in June of 2012; it became a great interest of Brevard College to add more variety to our athletics. Shortly after this announcement was made, Brevard College immediately began the search for a new lacrosse coach; as a result, Kevin Anderson became the Director of Lacrosse for Brevard College. A few schools in our conference already have lacrosse teams established, and a few more added lacrosse shortly after the announcement. This being the case, our new team will have about seven or eight other teams to play against at the start of its opening season in Spring 2014! Anderson played lacrosse all four years while he attended Pfieffer University. He now joins us from his previous position of three years as the assistant lacrosse coach at Piedmont College. While at Piedmont College, Anderson helped build their lacrosse team, creating an offensive team that finished 21 st nationwide in scores per game. Having Anderson as the Director of lacrosse is going to be an exciting addition for our Tornado Athletics! Anderson will be the head coach for the men’s lacrosse team, and there is still a search going for the head coach of our women’s lacrosse team. When this has been decided, the coaches will be announced. Anderson is hoping to have at least 25 men and 20 women for the teams here at BC. In trying to make up this team, Juan Mascaro, Athletic Director, announced that there will be tryouts for interested students at BC in addition to recruitment, similar to that of any other Tornado athletic team. At this time, it is unknown when the tryouts for current students will be, but it is looking like they will be in the fall semester of 2013, when lacrosse will begin practicing. A small amount of scholarship money will be given out to lacrosse team members. Students currently on scholarships have no reason to worry though! A new fund has been set up for lacrosse scholarships, and this will not affect any funds for other students. When asked what he thought about the addition of lacrosse to the Tornado Athletics, Mascaro happily exclaimed, “I really look forward to watching lacrosse and being part of the excitement that lacrosse will bring to our campus.” It looks like adding lacrosse as a conference sport has sparked some real excitement, both within the Athletic Director’s office, and amongst the current students. Being a new program, it is expected to bring excitement, but this looks to be big and will bring in a lot of new students that we haven’t had opportunity to reach out to until now. For spring 2014, we will have baseball, softball, and tennis playing on campus, as well as golf, track, and cycling off campus. This is a great opportunity to have another sports team get to play here on campus for the students to support! Start getting excited about this great new sport being played on campus and watch for more updates about lacrosse as it gets to join our spring sports list starting in 2014! WtastVu^iii^ IV'iVJ ilfui
