Cycling team gears up for a new season By Erica Zaveta staff Writer The Brevard Cycling team, or BCC, is gearing up for the 2013 spring collegiate road season. After having such an exciting fall and winter season, the road team is motivated and excited for the racing to get underway. Brevard College Cycling will begin its season with the Greenville training series, a race series that will be excellent for getting the team ready for the collegiate races. An event at Georgia Tech, held the second weekend of March, will be Brevard College Cycling’s first collegiate race of the 2013 season. BCC will continue racing the South Eastern Collegiate Cycling Conference races until Collegiate Nationals held in Ogden, UT, May 3-5. The tornados are excited to introduce two new riders to the BCC team, Thomas Smith and Nick Jowsey, both talented road cyclist but from very different backgrounds. Brevard College Cycling has both a diverse and coherent 2013 road team. The Brevard College Cycling team is excited for the upcoming season and wishes BCC team member Keith Marek a great semester abroad. BC falls to Wingate and Newberry By Matt Johnson staff Writer The Brevard men’s basketball team had a couple of tough opponents on their hands this past week. Although they fell short for both of these games, our men’s team never quit fighting, and they put up a very entertaining game this past Wednesday with tons of back and forth action! The first contest was against 6-0 Wingate. In the first half, our men’s team started a bit slow, and headed into halftime trailing by a score of 46-34. Brevard played a valiant second half, and had their chances to hand Wingate a loss. With just under 17 minutes to play in the game, Brevard was in a one-possession game. Down the stretch, Wingate’s deep bench was the factor. Brevard went on to lose by a final score of 78-57 in a game that was closer than the score indicates. Dominique Pickett led the Tornados with 15 points throughout this game. The Tornados next game was at home this past Wed. Jan. 23 against Newberry College. This game was a high-scoring and highly entertaining matchup. Brevard opened up the game on absolute fire, draining 10 out of their first 12 three-point attempts! While Brevard led by as many as 15 in the first half, Newberry also had a hot hand, and fought back until halftime with a 52^8 lead. In the second half, Newberry’s bench proved to be a major factor, and Newberry went on to take the win by a score of 106-88. Dominique Pickett dropped 31 points for the Tornados while teammate Manzy Miller chimed in with 20 points. These two players are proving to be a great addition to om men’s basketball team this season. Come out and support our men’s basketball team as they return to home game action at 4 p.m. this Saturday, Jan 26 and again at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan 30!
