Scott Heim’s second novel, tells the story of three misfits in a Kansas town, who take revenge on three rednecks who have terrorized them with accel erating acts of vandalism and violence. Harriett, mourning her son’s death by AIDS, Sarah, his best fiiend, and Boris, a foster kid hopelessly in love with one of the rednecks, have forged a unique fnendship and find an original solution to their victimization, which is not for the weak of heart. The novel is complicated by a confiision of reality and fantasy as the plot is inter spersed with the characters re-writing their own stories (each embellishing and fic tionalizing their own experi ences) for a novel Boris is writing. In Awe is very absorbing with well-drawn characters. (cont’d p.7)
