C L UBS CLUB OF THE MONTH / SIGMA PHI ALPHA Sigma Pi Alpha, a National language fraternity, was found ed at North Carolina State College during the Spring term of 1926. It originated as a student movement in the Modern Language Department of that college. Its objective is “to stimulate an interest in and to acquire a more intimate know ledge cf gecrgraphy, people, language, life, customs, history, industries, and culture of foreign countries, and to make a contribution toward bringing about a better understanding between these countries and ours by having a better knowledge of them.” Gamma Omega Chapter of Sigma Pi Alpha at Gardner- Webb College was organized in the Spring of 1950. This chap ter held its annual initiation Friday, April 9, 1954, in the Student Parlor cf Huggins-Curtis Dormitory. The old members in- dude: Mason Hudspeth, Doris Vance, Delols Hamrick, Bobbie irivette, and Helen Stinson. The newly initiated members of the fraternity are: Marie Turner, Evelyn Carswell, Loyd Smith, Bob Richardson, Lois Hoyle, Grace Yelton, Rachel Sellers, Kay Eostic, Minnie Ella Currin, Sally Kay Queen, and Leona Lamm. Mrs. Pollock is the fraternity sponsor. Y. W. A. MONOGRAMCLUB Gardner-Webb’s athletic director, Norman Harris, is the guiding light and faculty advisor of the 1953-54 Monogram Club. Coach Harris and this year’s president, Richard Year- wood, have worked hard to organize this year’s Club, which is composed of approximately thirty-five members. “The Monogram Club is one of the most active and most respected clubs on the campus,” said Richard Yearwood. By undertaking money-making projects, the club earns money to buy awards given each year. “In past years the Club has gained status by giving blood to those in need,” said Coach Harris. In order for a person to become a member of the Monogram Club, he must participate in any of the three major sports. This includes participation in either football, baseball, or basketball. However, before a person is an established member of the Club, he must be iniated. “This is a secret process known only to the Club members,” said Bunny Price, vice-president of the Club. “By obtaining membership in the Monogram Club you seem to gain an added quality,” said Harold Pearson, pitcher on the baseball team. “The Monogram Club has had status on this campus ever since organized sports have been here. The Club members are fine boys and should be commended for their work,” said Coach Harris. President Elliott declared that the Club is one of the most important personality and character builders here at Gardner-Webb. “Each year the Club sponsors a party. That’s when every one gets something to eat and plenty of it,” said baseball catch er, T. G. Harmon. New officers for next year’s Club will be elected in the near future. These officers, along with Coach Harris, will take on the responsibility of organizing next year’s Club. GLEE CLUB The Glee Club of Gardner-Webb College has been doing honors to themselves recently under the able direction of Mrs. Robert Gidney. Twenty-six girls make up the Glee Club this year and they meet two times each week for rehearsals. At these periods the group studies both sacred and secular composi tions. Along with learning new songs the girls learn such valuable information as ho wto breathe correctly, distinct enun ciation, choral conducting and many assets which will be use ful to them in their musical careers later in life. The Glee Club is active in such programs as student re citals, radio programs, banquets and other functions on the campus. On April 16, 1954, the Glee Club sang on the Gardner-Webb Radio Program. The program was one prepared especially for Easter, and several of the music students took part. The song rendered by the Glee Club was “Were You There?” The monthly meeting of the Young Woman’s Auxiliary was held on April 12 in the Hamrick Building.
