Proposed statement of university responsibility toward the student newspaper: The Pilot IS the Gardner-Webb University newspaper, and, as such, is ultimately a university responsibiUty. Univereity responsibilities toward the newspaper include allocating funds for equipment, supplies, and printing. However, immediate responsibUity for overeight and coordination is provided through the university EngUsh department Staff membership is open to aU students, but the editor is selected by the advisor, a member of the Enghsh department^ andsubmitted to the English departmentforapproval. The English departmentincludesprintjoumalism courses inits curriculum 0 provide training for the newspaper staff, and to fulfill major requirements in both Communications Studies and English Studies In keeping with the university mission statement, producing The Pilot provides a way for Gardner-Webb to support its emphases on “academic freedom with responsibility” and “free mtellectual inquiry and discussion.” Therefore, an essential part of the univereity’s responsibility toward the student newspaper is fostenng an atmosphere m which student writers may discuss matters of common interest and write critically about university fwlicK^and progr^s without fear of reprisal. At the same time, those immediately responsible for oversight of the paper must establish high standards of joumalisuc mtegrity and expect those standards to be upheld.
